... and was met by a monkey sat at my head height it gave me a bit of a scare! I didn't really realise quite how free to roam about they would be! The main attraction of the park is the onsen(hot water caused by volcanic activity) which the snow monkeys use to keep themselves warm during the harsh winters in Northern Japan. ... photos without anyone else being there. The main sanctum was divided into the inner and the outer. The inner sanctum had tatami mats, which meant that you had to take your shoes off first. Since it closed at 4.30pm and we only had 15 minutes left, it wasn't worth going in. We could walk around the outer sanctum till about 6.30pm.

... each and we had about 5 taxis to accommodate 21 people.

We caught the train to Matsumoto and then changed to go to Nagano. All this was on the local train and not the Shinkansen. By the time we reached the hotel, it was 8.15pm. We couldn't be bothered with dinner by that point and basically did the laundry and went to bed.

The next morning, we are due to go back to Matsumoto again to see the castle there.

We returned to the hotel for a nap. The bad thing about staying at a ryokan is that there is no bed. The futons are rolled up during the day and rolled out for us during dinner. When we returned to the station, Owen was waiting for us with the bus. We had enough time for a quick shower and dressed in the traditional formal yukatas for dinner.
