... Enjoyed our first tapas and sangria where after made our way down to Zarautz. We had delicious breakfast on a terrace overlooking the ocean and the swell that just entered. Continued to meet up with old friends of Sahid from Venezuela Denis and Roxana. A dynamic couple that showed us around Mundaka, a pitoresk village, with again great views and that day big swell! Sahid went for a surf and i enjoyed lunch with my new friends. 3 courses including drinks for 11 ...

After a nice hotel breakfast, we travelled by bus to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (yes, that is the name of a city - complete with a mouthful of hyphens) to experience a farmers market, a small taste of the "Camino de Santiago" trek and a nice Basque lunch from the Navarro region. Drove through Guernica, site of severe bombing in the Spanish Civil War in April 1937, with huge civilian casualties, and inspiration for Picasso's anti-war painting "Guernica." Drove on to Lekeitio for shopping, and to Ondarroa, where we overlooked cliffs and ...

... to Italy, and was really disappointed in the coffee!! For me the cigarette smoke in the cafés was painful, and I have to say I'm not a fan of people having their dog sitting on their lap in the middle of restaurants!

So leaving all of the joys of Paris behind us, we caught the TVG from Gare Montparnasse. This is a fast train so it was hard to keep up with the passing countryside, but we did see some beautiful sights!! Field after field of wheat, and ...

... not too hot and not windy. Large part of the road up in shade which really helped. Being a sunday morning not many cars t all but quite a few bike riders. We overtook some but were overtaken by others. Really enjoyable ride and not too hard at all. It gave us both great encouragement and i definitely want to attempt the even harder climb of the col de Galibier. At the top in the village Alpe D'Huez, in fact almost next door to the shop where we rented the bikes, we found ...
