After the world cup ended on the 13th, we decided to stay until the end of the week in order to see some more of Rio. We only had the apartment until Wednesday morning so we booked into a cute little hostel in the high up district of Santa Teresa. The hostel was lovely and very small, with amazing views over the city centre. However its location halfway up a hill meant quite a long walk up Rio's characteristic steep streets, with steps that felt like they went on ...

... boys decided to make a bet with me on who would win and what the score would be. I predicted the Netherlands would win 3-1 and he picked Brazil 2-1. Beer and dignity were on the line so we shook on it then took our positions for the game. What can I say, when the Netherlands got up a goal, I silently cheered in my seat with some hectic fist pumping action and kept my voice to a dull roar. The first two goals were a bit, sketchy as were ...

After a great nights sleep in my queen bed (albeit with Blake), wake up refreshed and ready for the first game we have tickets for, Belgium v Russia at the legendary Maracana. Hop in the shower, which is sort of like driving a stick-shift car (I imagine, having never actually driven one) dealing with the hot and cold water. Alex, David's friend from Orlando, is supposed to be meeting us at our apartment at around 10:00 AM so Blake and I head out to grab some ...

... Rio. We arrived in Rio and were met by our driver who took us to our hotel in Copacabana. The hotel (Copacabana Sol Hotel) is nothing flash but its 100m from the beach which is great! The weather was rainy when we arrived but we decided to stretch the legs so walked toward the beach and then along Avenida Atlantico toward the Fan Fest and Copacabana Palace Hotel. (where we will stay next time (US$1,000 per night – booked out by FIFA of course) The ...

... in the city called Rocinia. We got picked up from the hostel on a mini bus and had to pick up everyone else which took about an hour and a half, a bit annoying! We were taken around the Favela by a tour guide that looked just like Usher. It was quite a surreal experience, there were messy cables running throughout that were illegally stealing electricity, narrow little walk ways with men bolting past with crates of supplies to sell in the many shops. Loads of stray dogs, ...
