Don't take your eyes off the volcano

... 1 hour small loop taking in a good viewing point for the volcano but standing in the line and watching them cram people onto this bus like sardines makes us rethink, plus talking to other people waiting in line who are doing the 2 hour full island loop, we are convinced that this will be a much more comfortable way to go. The bus arrives and it's only about 3/4 full so that's excellent, well worth the extra cost because we have a seat and we will not end up squashed and ...

    One goes to a volcano

... trying to work out what I'm going to do when I get somewhere. The lady at information says to follow the tram tracks so I ignore this and follow the river. I go past some "birthplace of" people they are clearly proud of but I have no idea who they are. They've gone all out on tourist information even though there's very little to see. As the title suggests, my two Swiss friends and I were sort of forced to visit Kagoshima! Basically, Kagoshima was the only city in Kyushu which had any space in a hostel for three people during the time we wanted to visit Kyushu! In the end it worked out quite well because we wanted to visit Miyazaki and Nagasaki, so we thought we might as well start at Kagoshima and head North or as Drake puts it, start from ...

    It's the Kagoshima 鹿兒島 Day.

The boat docked at 7am. By 9am, we were in the bus ready to be the tourists…..The weather can’t be grimmer. By the time we arrived the noble residence 仙巖園 from the feudal time, it was raining cats and dogs. Cooped in the tour bus waiting out the rain, eventually ventured out. Glad that we packed a spare pair of socks. It’s a rainboots day!

... as it joined up to the mainland in the 1914 eruption ( on the east side so it still looks like an island and you need to get a ferry to go to it from Kagoshima). It has 3 main peaks, the main one being Naka-dake at 1060 meters but only the south one (1040 meters) is active. Luckily for me climbing is prohibited!!!!! I was able to take it easy - do a leisurely bus ride to the lookout points and then a bike ride around part of the island. A nice afternoon.
