    Day nine

This will be a fairly short entry since Peter and I cycled by ourselves today. Barry had proposed an alternate rout which was taken by Werner, Barry, Steve, Gilles, Don, Sue, Peter and I. Not sure where mark went although Peter and I did see him later. Tom, Linda, Dave, Michael, Wayne, Lori and Mesfin did the nominal. Turns out that Barry's route had a major climb to 1250, but it was an honest 5 to 6% ...

... a thought to the out-and-back a-on to the Guzet-Neige ski area. Caroline and I had a plan to visit the Niaux caves in the afternoon, so I needed to be all business on the road today.

Latrape was by the standards we were now accustomed to a pleasant warm-up climb. Down the other side, we came upon Michael, Mesfin, Wayne and Lori at the bottom in Aulus-les-Bains just as they were setting off on the next climb to Col d'Agnes. ...

In what is turning into a common refrain, last night my legs felt so good - in spite of yesterday's extra travails - that I was taking the stairs 2 at a time, whereas this morning I had definitely lost the spring in my step. Part of the problem might've been due to insufficient sleep, as I had stayed up late to get this blog all caught up (and still missed a few things, like the memorial to ...

... I passed the bakery 7 minutes too late to avoid its lunchtime closing. Daunted, I continued the descent – which was quite pleasant save for the coarseness of the chip-and-seal roadway- to Castillon where to my surprise I found a Casino that was open. My elation was short-lived, however, when I discovered it was already sold out of bread for the day (save for those that had been reserved. ...

... were stretches at 5%, most of the climb was at 7% or 8%. To add insult to injury, the descent had great patches of loose gravel, some of which was very difficult to see as we moved from shade to sun. Peter let it go, and scared himself quite dramatically. Lori and I just about used up all of our brake pads keeping the speed way down. We are going to have dinner here tonight, which will involve lots of discussion of possible "alternate routes" for tomorrow's ...
