    ... br> Not to be outdone, that road had a detour as well and I ended up outsmarting myself by ignoring it, since when I entered Luzenac feeling smug about having avoided all the traffic, I soon learned that I had to backtrack to reach our hotel, which was on the edge of town and right on the detour route I had avoided!

    ... down, with Peter doing most of the roaring while Lori and I descended at a more measured pace. The killer was that as soon as we got to the bottom we started the ascent of the second col which involved climbing over 400 metres inside 4 Kms. The sign said that it had an average grade of 9.7%, but Dave and Werner's computers registered 17 and18 %.
