Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Exe Vienna

      Pros & Cons

      from

      Pros: -cheap, -comfortable

Cons: -smelly bathroom, -dirty carpets, -untrained staff

      Not bad at all

      from

Stayed here for 5 days at the end of August with my wife. Was a little apprehensive after reading previous reviews but took a chance as I knew the renovations were complete and I got it for a great price. The room was on the small side but spotless and everything looked new, nice comfortable bed and the a/c worked perfectly. Excellent buffet breakfast and friendly staff. Although the hotel is not within walking distance to Vienna there is a tram stop just outside and it is only 5 mins to the S-bahn, so getting into Vienna is no problem. The only issue might be for those who want to stay out late, I think the last tram going back left about 12:30am so you would have to get a taxi after that but it is only about 10 euro. I don't have any criticisms about this hotel, just bear in mind what I said about too far out to walk into Vienna but good transport links. Vienna is a place I will return to in future, lots to see, old buildings are in great condition, fabulous museums, and excellent beer!

      A good hotel!

      from

The Eurostars hotel in Vienna was a good choice for our family. We stayed here August 11-13th. It is located on the fringes of the city, so you need to take public transport into the city. (Les than 12 minutes) The stop is right outside the hotel. Our rate was 69 Euros a night and this was a bargain. Our room was clean and spacious. It was ready at check in time. I read that this hotel was in the middle of the red light district....I disagree with this. Yes, there are a few shady looking establishments around the hotel, but hardly would I call this the "heart" of any redlight district. The hotel is very basic as far as services go, but it is cheap, clean, new and the breakfast was great! The air conditioning wasn't working so well, but we didn't need it, The shower/ bathtub was great and had good water pressure. There is a limited number of parking spaces at the hotel, but you can park right around the corner of the hotel for free. (Parking at the hotel is 15 Euros a night!) The front desk staff was not very knowledgeable. The only big complaint that I had about this hotel was that everytime I left the room, I needed to get my key rekeyed. I'm not sure why this was.....definitely a problem that the hotel needs to fix, otherwise a very satisfactory stay from a very seasoned European and world traveller.

Do Not Stay Here The Worst Hotel I Have Visited

      from

This is the worst hotel i have visited in a long time. When we arrived although we had reserved a room they had no idea how long we were staying for. WORSE STILL - It is still under renovation. It claims to have a swimming pool and sauna and steam room. It is still 'under construction' which i found out only after booking and paying. The air con in our room started spraying water all over the room and covered all of our clothes and computer equipment. Clearly an accident, but when i asked to move rooms i was given a key for a room that turned out to be occupied, scaring the occupants as it was midnight and they were asleep. The front desk then gave us a room with no wall paper, furniture or fittings which they didnt even know was like this. There computer system is not up to date with who is staying in what room, so this could easily happen to anyone. The breakfast buffet is a free for all with very little seating and the staff do not bother to clear away the plates. The hotel also happens to be in the middle of the red light district. Staff were untrained and rude.It should be a 3* at most. PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS

      Evitatelo!

      from

EVITATELO

Do not stay here till summer 2005

      from

The hotel is still under renovation even though they claimed to be 'completely renovated in Nov 04'. Only the rooms were ok - but the window in our bathroom could not be closed! in winter!! but we had already changed a room so didn't make a fuss . Even after renovation, it shouldn't be 4 star! The location is in an ugly part of town, although its really only 10 mins to central.

      Do not stay here!!!!!!!!!

      from

i thought this would be a nice place. DO NOT GO HERE AT ALL! It is under renovation and the rooms are too cold too hot, dust is everywhere. The manager is rude and does not care a dime. Please I highly advise you not to waste your time or money on this flea bag hotel. You risk your health and money on foolish people.

      Do Not Go There

      from

I stayed at this hotel a few months ago.

I was extremely disappointed in this hotel. This was not a 4 star, it was a 2 star and that is being generous. The dcor was extremely old, very dark and dull. The rooms were a good size and that was about it. The bathroom wasn't clean, and the building had lots of damp problems. The lifts didn't work most of the time. When were arrived I went to freshen up and noticed that one of the towels was dirty, it had snot on it. I pointed this out to the reception staff and they didn't even apologise and just passed me a new one without saying a word. I speak their language and I still found them very unfriendly.

This was one of the worst hotels I've stayed in.

      More 2* than 4*

      from

I also stayed in the Hotel Mate for several nights with a group of friends. The hotel was the most shabby 4* that I've ever stayed in.

Twin beds were booked and we were given double beds. Ventilation was non-existent in each of our rooms and earplugs were necessary to block out the noise from adjacent rooms. A single room had no shower, shower curtain or curtain on the window. An inadequate window blind allowed the sun in from early morning onwards. The staff were very much take it or leave it. The hotel was shabby, poorly kept and all of us were afraid to venture near the pool, judging by the rest of the hotel. It's not in the best area and taxis home at night are advised. I would not advise anyone to stay in this hotel

Did not care for Hotel Mate

      from

Hotel Mate was billed as 4 Star, central Vienna. Definitely not 4 Star and central does not necessarily mean convenient. Very noisy street, poor ventilation meant sleeping with earplugs. Dirty bathroom, carpet coming loose from floor, sketchy neighborhood. We did manage to spend the night, but left early morning for a different hotel.

If you are going to Vienna, be very aware of location, and try to stay as close to the center as possible.

I do not like all paintings, however some are very pretty. Also some painters have a very peculiar style.

Afterwards I stroll around, took some more pictures from houses in Vienna and then went to take part in a guided tour of the parliament.

The parliament is very pretty. The architect loved Greece and you can clearly see the influence when being in the building. There are 2 parts. One ...

We were so happy to finally get there and we'd allowed ourselves 2 hours before closing. But nothing could prepare us for what we saw next. People. Everywhere. So many! The line was about 3 blocks long!! We were devastated. Even if we lined up it would take 2 hours just to get in. So with crushed spirits we walked away and found a bar to ...

... also celebrities & dignitaries. The staff came out the front when we arrived to welcome us by rolling out the red carpet across the road and singing. We had to cut the red ribbon to go through the front door. Craig even got up and danced the Waltz with one of the professional dancers to the Blue Danube! Very quirky restaurant with interesting antiques hanging everywhere and even peep-show boxes in the ladies toilet - Ang had a good laugh! A very fun ...

Succesful at my personal goals? Part 2

... check off my list (Holland!) and other countries I didn't spend nearly enough time in (England, Czech), and others I cant wait to go back (Ireland, Croatia, Turkey).
And I honestly think I got to know Austria and in particular Vienna pretty well too despite all the traveling!

So there you have it! Some improved, others worsened but overall I really did give all three of my goals a good try (maybe not so much the learning German one but still)
