    ... however, the surrounding countryside is pretty - vineyards everywhere and distant snow covered mountains. We detoured to Desenzano on the banks of Lake Garda. Clearly a summer holiday town but a beautiful town situated on the shores of a huge lake. The water is crystal clear. Lunch at local trattoria consisting of local trout - scrumptious, a walk around town, purchase of veggies and fruit from local markets and off to the autostrada. ...

    Well from the outside of city there is a breathtaking view of the upper town but once you are in it I woudn't say the same. Still there is plenty to see wandering around the streets and lots of lovely churches to explore. But it's definitely not the best medieval town in Italy.

If you ever travel in Italy, watch the Trenitalia web site about 90 days out, and jump on the super economy fares when these are posted. Then select the business class ticket. You get the price you would pay later for the economy ticket. You won't regret the bump up to biz class.

    ... intrigue. You can almost picture him there painstakingly working on it all those years ago, adding to it if and when he got the inspiration (the painting took around 3 years to complete). He used a different "dry" painting technique for the light and shade effect and blending of tones (the traditional true fresco technique on damp plaster would have required him to paint much faster, and obviously he wanted to take his time).
