        ... removed which took half a day and we are now not allowed to go up there. The bridge itself is on a scissor jack and it drops down into the floor below. For a spell the helmsman will steer poking his head up through a little hatch and will duck as we go under the bridge. It is that tight. You can now see why these boats are the shape and dimension they are. (still pretty ugly though) but they just work. Even our little room just works and really we don't need more space.         ... easy to communicate, unlike Paris where everything was written in French and we survived in supermarkets, post offices etc on 1/2 English, 1/2 schoolgirl French. Here comes the fun part, the transport system is very busy. Trams, buses and cars all share the same bit of road, cycle ways are everywhere with huge cycle parking areas at train stations etc. Around 60,000 bicycles are stolen each year so you'd better chain your bike ...

        Patty and I are safely back on the Idi, traveling upriver to Amsterdam. It's our last night on the boat; when the ship docks the following morning, we'll all depart - each of us to separate destinations.
