The Abbey was founded by St Bernard (a local man from a noble family already involved in a monastery nearby) in 1119 but there was an interesting connection as the main patron was the Bishop of Norwich who had fled persecution in England and sought refuge in Catholic France, using his considerable wealth to fund the Abbey.
