... all up the Maurienne valley has been cloudy and rainy – and snowy higher up – all day. Generally grim in other words. Here is actually sunny, albeit a bit chilly.

          McDonald's, 9.15pm

I'm in McDonalds because it’s open and it sells food. Finding something vegetarian that constitutes a meal is a little tricky. ... it says many a good time has been passed here and many a fag smoked in the process. At the bottom of the stairs, the Michelin map of Europe with the grubby wear marks over Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, gives another angle to the tale.

Tonight’s meal was – three-cheese panini, chips and coke. Followed up by baguette and camembert leftover from lunch, plus out-of-date Snickers and out-of-date Coke ...

We left a sunny and calm Riomaggiore on time and without any fuss (apart from my iPhone needing retrieval from our locked apartment). My only frustration was that the ferry service was running for the first time during out stay and we missed our chance for an offshore view of 5T. From La Spezia, we set off with all our satnav technology tuned for a quick exit - however after a single ...
