Said goodbye to our little grotto and Varenna. Would highly recommend Hotel du Lac there! Today is a national holiday for Italy. Everybody and their brother is out - mostly biking on 2 lane highways we are trying to navigate. Between the bicyclists, the motorcyclists, the campers, the tunnels through the mountains and the windy, twisty roads it's a little nerve racking to drive ...

... to have an espresso in true Italian style - strong, black and sweet! It was excellent! Later I walked back to our hotel where the others had returned, and we then took the coach across to Lake Como about an hours drive away. Como has a population of about 90,000 and is a major centre of the region. It looked a typical Italian city as we drove in - old and pretty grubby - and didn't change much as we reached ...

Made it to Munich, grabbed a quick meal at a local Italian place and went to ...

... who we met. This amazing woman still cooks for herself on a regular basis and negotiates a tiny set of stairs several times daily up and down inside the house she shares with Bianca. We were invited to supper with Paolo and Emmanuelle in the house across the laneway that was once the family home and is now their retreat and respite from the busy, bustling streets of Milan. A great day and as always, so nice to meet local people and gracefully ...

... t driving through high mountains, but there was still quite a lot of hills to climb, small villages along the was and some of the hilltops offered great views of the area.

I stopped at a service station up near Vercelli in the central plains of North Italy. Had a coffee, a snack and had time to charge my phone and camera at a makeshift charging station. My bum and shoulders was starting to ache, but I still had a ...
