There appears to be very little that's authentic about Playa del Carmen. It wouldn't have been my first (or second, or twelfth) choice of destination. But everywhere else on the itinerary was someplace I wanted to see, and geographically, this was the most logical endpoint before
flying home. So life's a compromise, I suppose. And hey, there are worse things in the world than ending my trip with a couple of days on a beach.

... This is a buffet restaurant.

We were seated at a table and our napkins were placed nicely in our laps. Our waiter came along and offered us tea and coffee which we both gladly accepted. We wandered around and took a look at all the food. There was so many choices. Bagels, toast, buns, any kind of eggs you wanted cooked fresh for you. ... that you cannot bring your own food and drink and thus our bags were searched by the security. Once through the barrier we walked across the caravan park, with fancy campers protected from the sun by thatched roofs, to access the white sandy beach. It was nice and quiet despite being Saturday.
