Back to India to see the Taj

Wednesday, April 23rd
Reasonable start today as we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at the hotel in Delhi. The driver arrived on time and we were off to Agra. The drive took about 4 hours and was noteworthy because the toll toad that took us most of the way there was virtually empty. We stopped at a service station and saw a few tourist buses …

From Delhi to Agra

An early start our driver meets us at 8am and we hit some of the rush hour But are quickly on the new high road and I am the first asleep! I awake out of the bustle of Delhi and in the middle of wheat, mustard and potato fields. The potatoes are being harvested by hand in searing heat! Another nap and we stop of a comfort break to …

To Agra

5:45 am, Nov 20th, Delhi. I'm starving. The last 12 hours have not been kind. I've been alternating between passing out on my bed, or cleaning out my bag from the soap bottle that broke open during shipping, or trying to eat something without vomiting. The body wash I had just broke open and spilled into the bottom half of the suitcase. Luckily, it …

Taj Mahal, baby!

Great Place - Not 5 star like the US

Since arriving in India we have stayed at some down scale places so this was a real treat! The staff at the front desk is very stoic - I mean no personality what so ever - I wanted to take their pulse.

The restaurant and bars staff were awesome!!!! The rooms were very clean and the house cleaning staff was very accommodating. We asked for softer pillows, we go them, they checked with us to ensure that we were satisfied with them and again the next day. We stayed two nights here. Food prices (for India) were very, very high.

    Better than Clarks Jaipur

THis was a really nice hotel for us and the kids. a Good sized pool, quiet and a great restaurant on the top floor. A very nice view of the Taj from the restaurant.

However I wish hotels didnt lay carpets in hot climates. They just seem grubby!

Good bathroom/shower and much bigger rooms than most other hotels we stayed in.

    Quite satisfactory

After reading some recent reviews here, we went to the Clarks Shiraz with some trepedation. However, we were pleased to find that we had a nice, clean room, with a servicable, quite nice bath. (If your room isn't ok, then ask to change.) The hotel is located on attractive grounds convenient to the Taj. This is not an international five star, but it's quite ok for a short stay. The hotel's food is also pretty good. (No one goes to Agra for the food.) We used the travel agent located in the hotel to provide a guide and transportation to the Taj. That worked out fine, was reasonable in cost, and I would recommend it. The guide will help you get through the gauntlet before you get to the ticket window and protect you from the other guides.

    Very Servicable Hotel

This hotel could be any hotel anywhere in the world - a Marriott in Baltimore, a Wyndam in Washington, etc. Exactly what business travelers in the US expect (except no internet connection) when traveling - nice, clean, beautiful lobby, stores in the hotel, etc. The service was excellent at the front desk: when we said that we had to leave before the 'free' breakfast was included, they offered to pack us a lunch instead for our train trip - and they did. Very nice. They also helped us get rides to the TM and to the train station at 5:00am the next morning - and called the train company to verify which car we were on (our internet ticket didn't give us this info). We ate in the dining room on the top floor which was a very nice setting (food was ok). We only paid about $65 for the night and I think it's a great value for the money. Very close to the TM.

    Clarks Shiraz

We had just come from the sister hotel Clarks Amer in Jaipur and were disappointed by the Clarks Shiraz.

I was greatly suprised find the sales staff at the hotel gift shop come after us to buy, buy in the hallway just like hawkers in a street market. Just not what you would expect from a five star hotel. Front counter staff was short with us. We were traveling with a driver rather than a tour group and were dressed in travel clothing, not formally but neatly. My husband and I are also under forty, so maybe we weren't the type of guests they were accustomed to. When we arrived they doubted that we had reservations until I produced a hotel voucher from our travel agent.

Amenities in the room were sparse. No hairdryer, a phone with a broken cord and a dank bathroom.

I must comment that the Clarks Amer in Jaipur was much better and made us feel quite welcome. Clarks needs to give some attention to their property in Agra.

This hotel is quite old. The bathroom could do with a renovation. Not quite 5 star, infact border line 4 star.

    Not good value

We, too, were disappointed in Clark's Shiraz. The rooms were fine, but the hotel caters extensively to large tourist groups, and this is reflected in the bland cusine, the need to purchase tickets in advance for the buffet (definitely not worth the cost), and the extra charges, including internet use in the Business Center.

    Great Hotel

Second Hotel I stayed at in India. Hard beds, but normal for India. Pool was clean and refreshing. Sevice was very good. Breakfast was more than adequate. You can book a Tour, arrange for an all-day taxi, get a massage, get your fortune told and your hair done all on site. They exchange American Express and USD for a tiny fee. And the BEST restaurant, the Only, in Agra is within walking distance (GREAT food for a tiny entertainment!) Had a wonderful time.

    A place to sleep

This hotel is adequate for the quick overnight stay while visiting the Taj Mahal. It is close to the site and the staff is pleasant. The rooms are dingy and the bathroom had some cleaning issues. But, they gave us plenty of filtered water.

Even the Taj isn't worth this experience

I have rarely stayed at such a disgusting and filthy hotel. The dirty carpets were only equalled by the black marks around the tiles.

Even the food in the cafe was poor - our only experience of unpleasant food on our trip. (We didn't try the restaurant.)

The beds were hard - but that was our experieince in India generally.

The booking-in process was slow and unhelpful.

There msut be better hotels in Agra than this!

    Nothing special

We traveled the golden triangle (Agra - Jaipur/Udaipur/Jodhpur/Jaisalmer - Delhi) during Dec 04 and stayed at the Clarks Shiraz while in Agra. Nothing to write home about. Everything worked, the food was adequate, but I would classify it as a standard 3-star offering here in the States. Good for India, but nothing special.
