... to French Guiana to serve out their sentences of hard labour in the Jungle. The most difficult prisoners were sent to these islands, the worst of those to the escape-proof Ile du Diable (Devil's Island). Tens of thousands of the prisoners died of diseases & the inhumane conditions. Landing on the island we were told to be back at 4.30pm, being 10am at arrival that left 6 & a half hours to wander... Heading upwards to check out the old cell block ruins we passed ...

... weeks, so I throw that away and walk back to the hotel as quickly as I could!

The afternoon was taken up by a visit to a Chinese restaurant called Denis, the usual chicken curry was ordered and was very cheap and tasty! A siesta followed as the rain hadn't stopped! It also gave me time to assess where I am and where I'm off to next. On the flight from JFK to Quito, I had planned the trip up to this date, ie destinations, buses, flights, ...
