... independently as well though not much saving on the tour price and a hassle getting a seat on both the micro and the boat – need a minimum of 8 per boat and the minibus was oversubscribed so had to pay 5k each way.

... all this driving, the turbo had blown! Luckily if the driver kept the revs down we could continue (visions of spending the time on top of the mountain were not a nice thought). By the time we got there it was late but I guess when start gazing that is a good thing.

The guide was English speaking and very enthusiastic. He had a laser pointer which he waved around in the night sky like a light sabre pointing out various well ...

... plants - some were flowering - so we took lots of pics of the various kinds of plants. Astrid gave me a leaflet in Spanish that may have some of the names. I took photos of the wooden signs that labeled the plants but they only had their Chilean names. After awhile we got into the bigger trees - some had little tiny leaves and were quite small and at the very end were a few very large trunked trees with multiple trunks - I thought one ...

Well unfortunately today the servers are down for our 0.9-m telescope. Naturally this would happen on our first clear night of observing. But these things happen, and the workers here were extremely apologetic about it. We still spent most of the night in the dome, just relaxing, and waiting in case they were able to fix the servers. They ended up having to have a specialist come and help fix it, and they couldn't come until the next day. ...

... evening we all attempted to celebrate dieciocho with Sebastian, a Chilean guy at our hostel but the party happening at La Serena (starting at midnight and finishing at 5 am like all good Chilean parties) was crazy expensive so we ended up at a bar drinking pisco and singing karaoke together. Kim and Bob's rendition of Bon Jovi was definitely the highlight.

We even managed to fit in an afternoon visit to a local "pampilla" (music festival)...
A hectic but fabulous ...
