Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel BlueBay Balaia Atlantico Albufeira
Overall a very good experience
I have just returned from the Balaia Atlantico having spent 4 nights there with my husband and 1 year old daughter. Having read a few reviews before I went, and not knowing which ones to believe, I thought I would share my experiences.
We chose this place becasue it was VERY VERY cheap (November is off season and so there are some very good deals available). The accommadation is very good. The rooms are well equiped (especially the kitchen with all mod cons) and the bedroom and bathroom were modern and pleasant. Although the hotel is just a year or two old, the furnishings in the room are well used but this was not a problem. Remote controls for the TV and Air con were received by leaving a deposit at reception.
The outdoor pool area was very nice. It was a bit rainy when we were there so we certainly did not swim outside. There is an indoor pool which is heated - but it is small - more like a dipping pool than a swimming pool - still it was nice for the baby and it was not cold. There is also a gym which looked well equipped.
The complex has a shop which sells the usual ice-creams and beach balls etc. They sell a few basics too but you can't live off the food available from that shop. The supermarket is only a few minutes drive down the road so it is easy to stock up there instead.
Overall, we had a nice experience at this hotel. For the price we paid, we did fear that it was going to be quite poor but we were definately pleasantly surprised. Having said that, we were staying on a 'room only', and the one time we ate in the hotel made us happy we did not go All-inclusive. The food was far from the best portugal has to offer. Also, if you go in low season like we did, you will definately NEED a car to get around and about.
i stayed at this hotel-apartment (self-catering) at the end of October 2006 with my wife and child. We had a lovely time and enjoyed our stay. The hotel has great facilities and is very well maintained. The room we stayed in were of very high quality with all the cooking utensils we needed.
The hotel is a bit outside the town centre, but all the better for that. So, you will need a car to get around to restaurants/beaches. There is an excellent beach about 2 km from the hotel.
Away from the action but nice
we had a lovely stay the weather was great the hotel was clean and very modern even piped music to all rooms even the bathroom with a choice of channels. all rooms overlook the pool with a distant sea view. we had fridge, cooker, hob, microwave all good quality with plenty of hot water and a tv. You do need a car to get about as it is about 4 killometers from Albuferia centre the best thing todo is to pickup at the airport as this will save you £50 in transfers. It is very easy to drive in Portugal as the traffic is a lot lighter than at home. The pool was great with a childrens pool at the side and jacusi. Pool bar serving meals and drinks most of the day plenty of nice modern sunbeds with small tables and brollies. Very quiet at night. We were room only so we can not comment on the food quality but we spoke to other people and they had no complaints. There were some english people there but most I think were Portugese.
There are no resturants in the area within 20 minute walk only one that is down the lane at the side of the hotel. But a 5 minute drive into Albuferia you are spoilt for choice and very cheap and everywhere is very clean in portugal.
Overall we had a great time and will definatley go back to the Balaia Atlantico.

Great but for food
The hotel was lovely, the only thing we found let it down was the food, which was bland and just got boring after the first few days of the same stuff. However we found a really good restaurant/bar 2 minutes walking down the footpath which was just ideal. Great food, and really friendly staff (English & Portuguese). We just wished we found it earlier. Overall it was a memorable trip.
Well, having had holidays from hell, and too high an expection sometimes - I was glad to see that my choice of hotel for my family of 4 and my friends family of 4 was a fabulas one! It looked even better than the pictures online. You are greeted by large marble steps into the huge double glass doors straight into a huge air conditioned reception which has plenty of leather seating and a great bar. Our room was a dream, and all the same in the hotel, a huge master bedroom with a large wall to wall wardrobe and dressing table, a large hall, then a huge bathroom with his and hers square sinks, loo and b day and a large deep bath with a fab shower with lots of power. The main room, had 2 couches which turn into 2 beds, a dining room table and 6 chairs, a microwave/oven, fridge, oven and hob, lots of dishes and pots and pans - even a gravy boat! Every room has the same view, not one room looks onto a much hated building site or wall etc.... a big balcony over looking the amazing pool, and out onto the sea.... really is an amazing hotel. The water is yes, slighty chilly - but hey, it's roasting over there, so last thing you want is a warm pool generating lots of germs. The pool was cleaned everyday, and we saw it being checked using some sort of tool - must be for cleanliness, it was totaly spotless, and huge. There is also a small jacuzzi and a childrens pool, which is of generous size too. At the pool there is a bar and a cafe where they serve typical snacks, sandwhiches, pizza etc. The 2 resteraunts served beautiful food, and as my children are not burger eaters every night, they really enjoyed dishes of fish, portugese lamb stew etc - all just so tasty, but not for those who are still wanting a burger and chips abroad!
Now, for the only few downsides (- even though they didn't spoil our holiday, and have not stopped me from re booking for next year) Our children are 8 & 10, and one of the reasons we booked the hotel was for the kids club, which we have never had before, our children never used it at all - i'm sure it only runs for an hour and a half twice a week, and it's geared for ages 2 - 6 MAX. The room is really lovley, with painted Winnie the Pooh and mushroom seats etc, with colouring in and nursery rymes, perfect for 2-6, but no way for our children....and the hotel had said it was for ages 4-12!!!!! Outside next to the pool they have a pool table which we were charged 1 euro per game, tennis was 22 euro with 10 euro back if you gave back the rackets, and crazy golf at 17.50 euro with 10 back with sticks.....I thought this was asking too much really, as this was all that was available for the older kids, that and the pool - or football....(my kids were never bored though) We paid for an all inclusive holiday, so I thought these things should have been included...also the A.I downside is that you have your breakfast, lunch and dinner in the resteraunt - once your done, your done and can't go back into the resteraunt if your feeling peckish 3 hours later. There A.I is only actually available from 11am - 12pm with only burgers, pizza etc, if you want a steak burger, you have to pay....then it is a pay as you eat, then the A.I starts again from 4pm-6pm. Drinks however, alchoholic and soft and ice cream is available from 11am - 11pm, but after this time the bar closes and you must go to the hotel bar and pay full EXPENSIVE bar prices. You can't even get anything to eat at say 10.15pm as the pool bar for food stops at 6pm and resteraunt last eating is at 9.45pm. I'm not knocking the A.I, as we are not people that would eat all day and night - but we found it slightly unfair that our A.I deal was only actually for 3 hours a day for food. It would have been nice to order a sandwhich or soup at 11 pm, but there is nothing......so if your like me once you've had a few drams, you need a bacon sarnie - you can forget it!!!
Taxi's are a nightmare too, the drivers don't want to go too far, we were rufused a 15 min ride to Vilamoura to meet frinds as he "could not be bothered" hahahahahah, you can be waiting for up to an hour beween the hours of 4 and 8 for a taxi, and you can't pre book.
Yesterday we went to Zoomarine, it was a pure delight, well worth the visit and a fab day out no matter what age you are, also the water park was great too - but Zoo marine better. Well, my good positive comments far outweigh the little tiny things that didn't spoil our holiday - but I think it's better to let people know. Hope you give it a try, you won't be dissapointed!
Loved this place!
Just came back yesterday from this hotel and only downside was having to get a taxi
into town. Brand new, so spacious and clean apartments. Very luxurious furniture and
kitchen. Pools were freezin, yes ,but my kids didnt get put off by that.
LOts of sun loungers so that pleased me!! Didnt go down til about 9.30a.m. most days
and still got loungers. Food was better than i expected and service was very good. Staff were very friendly especially Rudy who works at poolside bar. Would definetely go back again.
Beautiful, modern and clean
Just back from a week at this hotel and we enjoyed our stay. The hotel is exactly as described by the tour operators - new, clean and modern, 4* accommodation, outside of Albufeira. You will need a car to get around as it's quite remote with nothing to see or do in the area and definitely too far to walk to town. There is one restaurant within walking distance which is just okay and one small supermarket about 10 -15 mins walk away but that's about it. There was no real atmosphere in the hotel or poolside but that was probably because there weren't many people there at the time. The water in the pools was freezing too, I only braved it once under pressure from one of my young daughters (the other two girls tried the water but refused to get in). It was icy cold! They have a good kids club every day (1.5 hrs) with extremely nice leaders and they made lovely arts and crafts items to take home. They also have a mini disco for half an hour most nights. We tried the hotel buffet one night and it was quite nice (€17:50 pp, half price for kids 5 and up), gorgeous desserts in particular! If cleanliness is important to you, as it is for me, you won't be disappointed. The room was cleaned every day except Sunday and we got clean towels each day too.
So all in all, I would recommend the hotel but wish it could be transplanted into the centre of Albufeira. I missed being able to just walk out of the hotel and go for a stroll around shops etc. I felt quite isolated and was so glad we had a car to go places.
New and pleasant accommodation
New and well epuipped, very comfortable apartment hotel.
Service is commendable. If you rent the room safe you
have all but bought it! The pool is typical of Portugal, cold at all times of the year (solar blankets are yet undiscovered). The restaurant has typical Portuguese "cuisine" (oil soaked rice, unimaginative
overpriced food, tough beef yet excellent pork).
The criticism is of somewhat minor points and we would not hestitate to recommend this hotel which is operating well especially for one which only opened recently.
By the way, you are out of Albufeira by only five minutes in a scenic and quiet setting with ocean views.

After our 2 day sail we pull into Portamao and decide to drop anchor rather than go into the marina as it was a lovely big bay by the beach and a lovely afternoon. Just what we needed after 2 long days at sea. The sunset was beautiful and a cosy night in board before getting up at 3 to head onto Sines on the west coast of ...

A boat trip along the coast enabled us to see the interesting shapes and formations and explore some of the grottoes that have been formed. I had been warned that the sea was cold as it was the Atlantic but OMG it was cold! I decided to be brave and get in but it took some getting used to. Once ...
A quiet day at our town today... Wandered to the town/village at the sea front and had a wander and coffee. Big purchase... A new pair of jandals. Havianas and cheaper than in NZ so grabbed a pair.... Don't suppose I will have much call for them for few months. Bill enjoyed a very extensive port shop ... Very big for size of town... Two floors. Beach not so calm today... Wind from Spain apparently.... Said with derision and blame !!!! Like it's their fault!!!! Still blue ...
Setting off from Estoril following our GPS ( Australian man's voice) we then went over Lisbons suspension bridge heading to the Algarve. As we headed south there were lots barren dry lands....bit like Australia actually. Almost expected the odd Kangaroo to appear. Very little grown it was so dry ... Then we went further and lots olive orchards, orange trees, and some animal farms. A very quick trip along the motorway .... Great roads and easy to get somewhere fast. Listening ...

Monday is a chore day and we spend it in busy Vigo doing laundry. Afterwards we drive across the border to our next country, Portugal. To date, we have travelled 12 countries and 9 capital cities in just under half our travel time – almost three months.
The beach at Esposende is windy, so after a quick nose around the area, we stay in for the evening.
