    This morning belonged to the women! Only Kath and I were interested in seeing the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam, so the two of us got up early for breakfast and took the tram (we finally have mastered the art of the trams here!) to the House for the 9 AM opening. There was a huge line, so we waited about 1/2 hour to get in. It was so worth it. Oh my goodness, it was heart-warming and heart-wrenching at the same time. ...

It might also be interesting to note that a hospital wing was established on the property during the first world war by the castle’s doctor who offered his services. The hospital he personally funded was to be the recovery and aid centre for thousands of soldiers who fought in the great war.

    ... The whole city of Amsterdam is built on piles. Piles are big stakes, originally wooden, but now made out of stronger material that get secured to the earth. They then lay foundations on the piles and build streets, buildings, homes, etc. There is a whole science to this.
