      Good Room

We have been told not to expect too much of the hotels in Switzerland. The Hotel Baren proved to be an exception to this. It has good sized bed, bath and sitting rooms and a balcony with beautiful views of the mountains behind St. Moritz.

The food was OK but not what I would normally order (Broccoli soup, ham and turkey and fruit salad).

There is no internet in the room but it is available in the lobby.

... since they live right on the border. I guess that kind of spoils my reasoning that "I must walk across Switzerland to Liechtenstein, because the trains are too expensive". But I've been having so much fun walking, there's no way I can stop now!

They do give me their phone number and invite me to stay at their place when I reach Liechtenstein.

I've only been here a couple of hours and am already being offered a place to stay! A nice welcoming to ...

... enough excuse to completely abandon a village... My suspicion is that it's the same scenario as what's happened to the mountain villages of Umbria: at one time people lived off the land here, perhaps herding goats and growing food on small plots of land, but over time the easier life of the cities and plains was too enticing... people moved away and forgot their village and way of life. I ponder this as I continue on up the trail, pausing at ...

... stone walls and trails I come across along my climb. Old sheep pens perhaps? Relics of another era, when people actually tried to live off of these rugged mountainsides? Finally it's time to make my slow descent, reminding myself that if I keep making wrong turns like this, I'm never going to make it to Switzerland. But I do... again... I take another unmarked trail which I assume will take me on up the gorge to the pass... no... the path ...
