      ... the Ankara Castle ruins. A village has been set up within the old walls and it is like a tiny community within a crowded, bustling city. The steps leading up to the top of the ruins were lined with women, crocheting while they were seated beside their wares - crocheted bags, beaded bracelets, earrings and key rings. Urchins were running around, kicking a soccer ball, then after they gave up on that they were running along the ramparts - which were an OH&S nightmare! ...

      ... Ankara not at the sites. The centrepiece was a reconstruction of a royal tomb from Alacahoyuk (where I was headed next). Spent 2 hours pouring over their exhibits before driving an hour south to A.
      Alacahoyuk is right out in the midst of farming country. A small ultra-modern museum at the site. The famous gateway is full of atmosphere but otherwise you need a lot of imagination.
