... with great relief that we all bid farewell to the knacker men about six stops in, and the loud family and 'Dola!' child shortly after that (I asked Ying and she said 'Dola' means "we've arrived" or something similar). The old man was obviously taking a train somewhere, but it wasn't mine, thank goodness. When we arrived, I walked miles and miles through the underground to the Station South Entrance (I knew I had come in from there when I came from Beijing, simply because that's the way ...
Wangfujing, Beijing, China marymc21... was that scrappy kid from Scranton with working class roots raided by hardworking parents who had to save every dime. Sarah Palin, well she was just a stupid and unsophisticated as any other American, but here she was, on the footsteps of the vice presidency (and presidency since McCain's so old). Well China too has a story about people coming from nothing and making it in the world. The Imperial Exams were given to all students in China and ...
Beijing, China sofieregitze... 27. He is one of tens of millions of uneducated peasants who have flocked to China's cities to secure bett** futures for their families. He works on building sites in Beijing, ten hours a day, seven days a week, returning home twice a year. He makes this sacrifice so that one day he can send his two children to univ**sity and they can share in China's new prosp**ity. "I hope they can design great buildings, not just build them like me," he said, adding ...
Beijing, China happysheep... stamps me in. jason is not so lucky. he has an old passport with the actual photo laminated on it. not one of the new ones with it scanned over a hologram background. i debated on this before we left but the wait for passports was very long due to the change in the canadian and mexican border requirements. once again, they take his passport to the back room and take him from the line, leaving me legally in china and him on the other side. an hour passes. all the people ...
Beijing, China ireneandjason... which i had to get as my plane left at 9am and ur sposed to be there at 3 hours early. However, when i was dropped off in the cold pitch black of beijing i had no idea where the bus was and what one to look for. After running around like a headless chicken feeling completely hopeless, so i waved down a taxi :-( Sometimes you beat Beijing and sometimes you don't. I got to the airport at 7.10 and by 7.40 i was waiting at my gate for the plane! I shud of just waited for the next bus!
Beijing, China tsjones3... how far we would have to walk to reach the island where the pogoda was located we opted for the ferry. We then began the ascent to the Pogoda. The views where phenomenal. Apart from the yellow haze which hasn't budged since we arrived. After tucking into Beef Noodles we set forth to find the Forbidden City. The walk was as long as the city itself. The city is colossus and you only get a ...
Beijing, China sandrasjraar... Gong Lama Temple. Despite Jim's protests that it was yet another slopey-rooved temple, even he had to admit it was worth visiting. It was built at the end of the 17th century as a prince's palace, in 1723 when he became emperor and moved to the Forbidden City, the building was retiled in imperial yellow and turned into a temple. From 1744 onwards monks from Tibet and Inner Mongolia moved in and it functioned as a lamasery until it ...
