Trekking at the end of the World!

So after visiting the tourist office yesterday we decided to get up early and catch a bus to the Tierra del Fuego national park and do some walking. We put on all our layers and fleeces and headed out to brave the cold!

The national park itself was beautiful, and it took us about an hour to actually get to the part of the park where the trails were. We even passed a golf course which was part covered in snow, which must be the southern most golf course in the world ...

Chilling at the end of the world!

... frozen solid but obviously cracking under the car. Right up our adventure alley (some co-passengers were not so convinced with white knuckles hanging on for dear life). The reward at the end was worth every white knuckle moment in the form of an idyllic lake side hut where the guide made a 3 course braai for lunch all washed down with some glorious red. We were lucky to see a red fox (apparently unusual around this time of year) and also the more common ...

#15: Not quite the end of the world, but close

... Lonely Planet guide before arriving and, in reality, it deserved even less. Chile's most southerly outpost of size and the main departure point for Antarctica may be an industrious port town, but it's totally devoid of conventional charms. Trust me, I searched hard. It's location on the inky Strait of Magellan held geographic promise but when reached, only a string of ageing fishing trawlers, a washed-up ribbon of beach litter and a biting wind rewarded my ...

Its the Fin del Mundo as we know it...

... the middle. This happened on Tierra del Fuego (the land of fire - named by Magellan for the fires that the natives burned on the island day and night to keep themselves warm), after the windy but short ferry ride. Again we were lucky with the cetaceans, as a group of about 6 Commerson´s Dolphins played near the boat before we left. Tierra del Fuego is a large island south of South America that is shared by ...

From Bonito to Ushuaia

... my group went to a proper Tango show which was awesome. That night I stayed out to the wee hours and pretty much danced the night away. I was the only surviving person from my truck and was out with Steve, Julie, Pete and Sandra. It was a great night out.. hadn't had so much fun since Rio! The last night was St Patricks day, and we have three Irish on our trip so that was a big night to say the least. It was also our last night, so I had packed just before we went out ...

Again Jim and Yvette booked a Sally tour. The three of us took a bus to National park Tierra del Fuego where the Ruta 4 takes you to the end of the world. We walked a lot, searched for otters that we could not find but we saw the dams they build. We wanted to ...

... other hand do yourself a favour and avoid the Los Lupinos hostel at any cost. The food was great too with a good selection of bakeries and the sandwich restaraunt that never failed to please, La Martinica. Oh how I'll miss your milanesa pollo completa (chicken schnitzel topped with tomato, cheese, ham and a fried egg) when I'm eating guinea pig in Peru. The beagle channel was nice, although ...

HELLO Feb 8 830pm leaving Antarctica heading for the Drake 2 day passage back to the Ushuaia We had a nice afternoon at halfmoon bay, saw lots of chinstrap penguins, many more seals, I watched a couple of seals playing in a inlet sliding as the water surged thru the gap. The biologist on board found a new plant that had only been seen by less than 10 people in the world, Halfmoon bay was a very senic area, very rugged with lots of rock formations. we are starting into the ocean and ...

ANTARCTICA - The beginning!

... nation one is, I can honestly state that Ushuaia is one pathetic and desolate place in the middle of nowhere. I remember many years ago seeing on the French TV (while I was living in St. Martin) a beautiful and sexy commercial for a new shower soap gel called Ushuaia. What was particular about it was the use of unusual and rare fragrances collected from the most remote places around the globe, and thus the name of Ushuaia seemed to convey exactly this ...

Getting to the end of the world

... among the islands that make up Tierra Del Fuego. We landed after 8 local time, the sun still high and shining and got a lift from a Bolivian cabby to our first choice of hostel. Turned out it was full, so we started our trip on yet another great foot... 36 hours on the road, exhausted, not much cash in the pocket on a Sunday night, wandering around a new city. Thank God it was not gonna be dark for a few hours. we ...
