2/19 3:01 pm The train to Nice was pretty relaxed. I talked to a French businessman for a bit and we shared a few laughs. The train from Nice to Rome was a sleeper. I talked to the roommates for a bit. There was a couple from India and a guy from Japan. When he found out I was from Seattle he immediately mentioned Ichiro. I said oh yes and showed him my backpack which has a red sox symbol drawn on it. He was ecstatic and we talked about Diasuke and Okajima for a little bit. He reenacted Okaji...

... where Leonardo played practical jokes, where Mussolini entertained Hitler.
Rome has always been serious about its image. The City was built to have substance. Romans invented concrete and they have continued to build with the most enduring materials available. You won’t find any particle board in Santa Maria Maggiore. Street curbs and gutters are marble, fences are cast iron, many streets are granite, garbage bins ...
... now, i have seen plenty of churches in my travels and am usually the first person to turn down another church visit, but this one was different. Each room in the church has been decorated with the bones of dead monks. It was really quite weird. Stacks and stacks of human skulls in a corner then rib bones making a decrotive pattern on the ceiling. pelvic bones making star shapes around the light fittings. There were also deceased monks surrounded by bones in a shrine like set up, many of ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy ianforster... Reading the many stories and history about the Wall was extremely affecting. Yet again, I found the German approach to fairly recent national history very interesting--they seem to always handle their existing cultural heritage and sites in a tasteful, illuminating way. Next we made our way over to the Reichstag building, which once held meetings of the German parliament. Burned down by the Nazis in 1933, it was rebuilt and now houses the ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy roadster76... of this! After the worst part of the turbulence was over Deana came out of the bathroom expressing a few expletives but it wasn't anything that everyone else on the plane hadn't already screamed out. We made it finally in to Gulfport (now with huge bruises forming down my side from where i went airborn)and her mother and step father met us at the airport with Deana's car. So we loaded our luggage and off we went. It was great just to hear American music on the car ride home. Deana ...
Rome, Italy heartofthesouth... went the wrong way. So I got off and caught a cab, pretty much knowing I was going to miss my bus. I get to the bus station, and yup, it left 5 minutes ago. No worries though, another one leaves an hour later, getting me to the airport JUST in time. I literally got there and boarded just as they were closing boarding. In teh meantime, at check in, an Italian couple tries to budge in front of me and I tell them there's a line. The husband glares and me and ...
Rome, Italy misschristie... our packs on in the 37 degree heat, it wasnt a wise move but we got to go to the colloseum. it took us pretty much all till 1230 to find it and back again. needless to say that we were stuffed so we crashed out. we spent another day there, looking around the sites on the hop on hop off tour which was great value for money because there was no way that we would have made it everywhere in the heat.
Roma, Italy johnfazz... crazy drivers... oh well Tv's all in italian of course so we ended up watching 80's music videos on MTV :) Of course it had to be an 80's special :) Oh yah...before heading out to Italy, I already had an impression of italians just from what my parents have said and what they've experienced at their store. Basically, what I thought was that they are loud folks who like to look expensive but actually end up buying the ...
Rome, Italy nubert... Few dishes are accompanied by any vegetables, and they charge an extra L6,000 for each additional vegetable, even a single artichoke. I had the "plate" dish; Roast Pigeon. It was also wonderful-rich dark meat but moist and flavourful. As we finished eating, a pigeon walked into the restaurant and began pecking around my feet. Honest!!! I even videoed him as proof. He couldn't find his brother. The waiter appreciated the joke, and when Ches suggested ...
