La Paz

Going back to La Paz was a lot less traumatic this time, ie. no freezing overnight bus journey, & the extra hot showers at Hotel Torino were very welcome. I have to say I am a big big fan of the city with its penchant for crazy non stop bus services, drivers yelling the destinations incoherently out of the windows, the amazing range of ice cream on offer - 20 types at least including Oreo flavour! - the illuminous & huge tortas on display, the many petticoated, bowler hat wearing old ladies &...

Llama foetuses anyone?

Arrived in La Paz following a 12 hour train ride and a 7 hour bus ride where the driver insisted on repeatedly playing a tape which consisted of classic American lovesongs sang in spanish at full volume. We got a cab to Hotel Torino where we met up with Rory and Aaron. They had been there 4 days already, and despite apparently attemptng to leave twice, theyd never managed it - feebly claiming oversleeping and hangovers. I think they were missing us too much really. La Paz is a great city (the...

The Beauty and the Beast (by KCT)

Bolivia is just amazing! When we planned our trip months ago, we thought that we would just cross Bolivia in order to get from Brazil to Peru, but we ended up staying 29 days in that country! And if it wasn't our visa which only allowed us to stay 30 days in Bolivia, we would have stayed so much longer! For example, we ended up to stay 10 days in Sucre which lies at an altitude of 2750 m. It was just a wonderful place! The city is the constitutional capital of Bolivia and has a well-conserved...

I never thought that I liked big cities so much.

Our last night in Uyuni was fun. We went to a pizza restaurant listed in the lonely planet with our 2 Canadian friends. An American opened up ¨Minuteman Pizza¨ and it was amazing. It was quite the nice little break from Bolivia if I do say so myself. We took the train from Uyuni at midnight today, and arrived in Oruro at about 8 am. From there we directly took a cab to the bus station and within 5 minutes were on a bus headed for La Paz. The bus ride was decent and cheap, and was only 3 hours...

What do people like about La Paz???

La Paz, city of peace... A city where I got no peace at all; if anything, its inhabitants have been working on destroying my nerves. I sound like a little sour puss, don't I? Well, I didn't have the best of times there. I heard so much about Bolivia - almost every traveller I met claimed that Bolivia was their favourite place of all they had visited. They said there was a lot more indigenous culture here than in other parts of Latin America. That La Paz is stunningly set and interesting to e...

La Paz

La Paz, a city without any charming but with character. The arrival was impressive as we could see the whole city from "El Alto", the poor area located 400m above the centre. As you can see on the first photos, the city has been built without any scheme, with small streets in order to use the space as much as it is possible. Even the centre, where the streets are bigger (but not enough for the amount of people on them), different kind of buildings are combined (high, small, classic, modern). ...

Uyuni

Hola quapies!

... so much going on! We read and had heard of a lot of bad stuff happening to tourists here, so we didn´t take anything apart from the cash we´d need, out of the hotel. Our first day was great, we wandered the city and found a cultural festival going on, with loads of bands and street performers. There was a brilliant vibe, so we just relaxed and recovered from our Uyuni trip. <br> Ian and I were ...

Journey to the City in the Sky

... sandwich (!)... transferred to our la paz flight and set off - al set off the security machines again &amp; a guy from a Peruvian sports tour collapsed in the queue! the flight to Lima was nearly 13 hours, which we spent sleeping, eating, watching films - i saw three in the end, wandering to and from the loo and kicking the lady´s chair in front of me, she was really annoying - she just kept pushing her seat back, especially when i had food or drink on my little ...

La Paz

We arrived in La Paz by bus in route from Puno, Peru late in the afternoon. La Paz is shaped like a crater. As the bus rounded the crest of the crater, we got our first glimpse of the city. It was already a dark, and cloudy day. This only added to the eeriness of the brown dusty overcrowded capital of Bolivia. Billboards and murals of Evo Morales were ...
