Hostal Tejadillo Havana

We began our two-and-a-half week trip to Cuba with three nights at the Tejadillo. It's got bags of atmosphere and lovely rooms with high ceilings. (Make sure you get one with a balcony looking out over the street.) The location is terrific, within walking distance of all Havana Vieja.

The bathrooms are slightly dilapidated and the breakfast was pretty Soviet, but this is Cuba, after all.

After the Tejadillo, though, we stayed instead with Cuban families in casas particulares. This is a much better way to see the real Cuba, as well as being far cheaper (usually $25 for a double room with breakfast). If you speak just a smattering of Spanish, you'll enjoy it.

To find these, and to get round Cuba in general, you MUST buy a Lonely Planet guide. It's invaluable.

We stayed at Tejadillo for 6 nights in September. We got here more than what we have expected. The location of the hotel is just amazing. When we arrived late at night the neighborhood was a little bit scary - narrow street, a big pile of junk just in front of the entrance and the locals sitting around it... well... strangers in a strange land, but next morning we didn't find it as bad, we were laughing at the first impression, as we found out that behind the pile was an elementary school. So, the place should be safe... and it is. Actually the pile was cleaned up a few days later - we used it a navigation point.

The hotel is beautiful with the two inner gardens (small green lizards live on the palm-trees, they are lovely), it's clean and well-kept. According to Lonely Planet the hotel's income's big part is used for the restoration of Old Havana since it's Government-owned, so your money goes into good hands. The location is just excellent since everything you want to see is in walking distance. You can easily get into the maze from here, it's fabulous. The flea-market is awsome and really cheap.

Note, that most of the rooms don't have windows except the ones facing the street. If there's one available of these, go for it! These are noisier than the ones without windows, but worths the experience of watching a different lifestyle that's right in your face.

The local band 'Coral Negro' plays good music, listening to them in a company of a good coctail one evening is a must.

I stayed at this hotel for two nights in March with my 10 year old son. The room was large with good air conditioning and a fine bathroom. The courtyard is lovely. Our room was very quiet. The location is excellent (smack in the old part of Havana where there are no cars allowed!). I thought it was very good value for the money. As well, there was an excellent tour operator at a desk in the lobby and she can easily arrange tours, transportation, etc.

Had a good time at this hotel. The staff were friendly and the rooms big and clean.

We had a room onto the street with a balcony. This was great for the atmosphere and hanging out watching the world go by and waving to the neighbours. However not so great for sleeping - but who comes to Havana to sleep anyway?

We were a bit late for breakfast (about 15 mins before it ended) and there was no cups or plates and not much food. That's our own fault really!

I stayed at the Tejadillo from December 20th - 25th, recently on my trip to Cuba. The rooms are nicely furnished with wooden and iron furniture. The staff are helpful and give suggestions re tours, resturants etc. The location is good because of its proximity to all the areas of interst in old havana all within walking distance. To me old hanava, has much more character than Vedado where i subseqently stayed for 10 days. The day tour to Pinar Del Rio in the Vinales valley is worth the trip as well as the Parisenne carbaret show. I also attended the Tropicana carbaret Show which was more of a spectacle with the fancy costumes and lights The best flea market is located just outside the Tejadillo and has much more variety and quality items than two others located in Vedado. on La Rampa and on the Maleco. Taxia are inexpensive but i would advise using a map to explore Old havana on foot. There is a heavy police presence everywhere and as a female i never felt unsafe.

Hotel Tejadillo was great, service was OK, Cuba does not manufacture toilet seats and you have to flush with a bucket full of water. You will pay $100 a night for $35 a night Super 8 accomadation but the experiance is worth it. Get away from the tourist $ restaurants where you will pay high prices for bad food and go to the peso restaraunts (25% of the cost). Buy the Lonely Planet Guide and when you do the horse drawn tour make sure you ask for Oswaldo Lopez ( Oz) he took us to meet his uncle in Minas ( about 150 km from Havana). We stayed with them for two days and as poor as they are the hospitality was beautifull. Tell Oz Dave and Pete the the brothers sent you.

Tejadillo is a good mid price hotel in Old Havana located within 60 seconds of Plaza de la Catedral and the Famous Bodeguita del Medio bar.

Getting to sites in Old Havana takes minutes and only a 15 minute walk to more central atractions such Capitolio or the Malecon. The hotel was clean and tidy with many original features in the building. Breakfast is limited but OK. The bar serves the best Mojitos we tasted and normally has a good band playing during the afternoon. The air cond and hot water worked just fine. A great place to stay if atmosphere and proximity to many characterful bars and the music they contain is your thing.

My experience at the Tejadillo was fantastic. The staff was friendly, gave great tips on things to do, and were very helpful. The location in Havana Vieja put me close to a market, sightseeing and other hotels. The rooms are charming with high ceilings, elegant furnishings, and modern amenities. I had a room that opened onto the street and exchanged smiles and greetings with a family in the building next door. There are 2 beautiful small open courtyards, one with seats for having a drink, the other with plants (great for pictures). While the hotel did not have a swimming pool or gym, it was relaxing, and I got a lot of exercise just wandering around the city.

Great place to stay!

I found the Hostal Tejadillo to be just what we wanted in a hotel: quiet, well-located, beautiful, clean, and intimate.

Located in Old Havana, the Tejadillo is near the historical sites, nightlife and museums (it is right across the street from the Cathedral and a few houses down from the Museum of Contemporary Art). Also within one block's walk are the arts and crafts market, the Bogedito del Medio, and an internet/long distance call facility (Etecsa).

One of the best aspects, to me, was that the Tejadillo is off the square a bit, so the hawkers, drinkers and other noise makers aren't constantly part of your experience. You get to leave them behind when you have had enough of them.

The breakfast is good (neither lavish nor skimpy). The people who work there are friendly and helpful. The rooms are charming and located around a well tended courtyard.

It isn't a resort, so there's no pool, weightroom, or that kind of thing. But for a charming place to stay, it is hard to beat.
