Got the local bus from Ica to Pisco and found a really nice little hostel just off the main square. Pisco is not what i expected. It was hit by a massive earthquake 2 years ago which measured 7.9 and lasted 2.5 mins. Pretty much destroyed the town. The hostel we were going to stay at cos it was in the guidebook is now closed because of it. The streets are a mess and many buildings are just rubble (although thats pretty normal for Peru). Checked in by 10am and got showered and changed. Out in ...
Pisco, Peru andrewjlathamRae and I went to go and find a museum for the inquisition. When we found it, it was shut. Darn Monday´s. We did find a bakery, it was a bit of an experience. You needed to pay for it first then pick it up. Interesting when you don´t know what you are ordering in order to ask for it. Lots of pointing and charades. Daily at 12oclock in the Main Square - Government Palace have a changing of the guard. They had a brass band and do the goose step. The uniforms very bright red and blue. Unfortunat...
Pisco, Peru sarah.nicholls... very basic but clean, and nobody else was in the restaurant. How could I be sure that their facilities were OK and I would not come down with a food poisoning? Well, you have to live dangerously sometimes, so I took the chance. The dish was surprisingly spicy, but tasty. Luckily, it was served with yams which helped take off some of the chilli flavour. They had served bread to it as well, however, the first pleasure of receiving nice warm bread quickly faded, when it turned out ...
Paracas, Peru chrisser71... orange life jackets that made everyone look like road safety t**ts, and we sped off into the rising sun. Cool air washed through my head like an ice bucket and my avocado and cheese sandwich that I´d eaten for breakfast began to make its way back up from the depths as we bounced around on the open sea.

Our first stop was the Candelabra, a strange shaped sign a bit like a poor man´s Nazca line that had apparently been inscribed in the desert hill for centuries ...
Parakas, Ica, Peru alberto66... by and large just dusty remnants of what used to be. The banks had rebuilt themselves of course but the tatters of the city that once was had an eerie silence to it. We decided to skip town as most of the hostels seemed to have half of their building missing.

Now we knew why the taxi driver had asked us whether we preferred to got to Parakas instead, and seemed reluctant to take us to Pisco. To the port captain! We´re going to poor man´s Galapagos!.

Boobies, Humboldt Penguins (adorable), Pancho the
Sea lion and his nest of concubines, a guano-guard who bummed two
cigarettes off me, giant starfish and mussels galore, and glimpsed
the crest of a few passing bottle-nosed dolphins. Paracas, Peru nathanialwestAfter a few days of grey skies and chilly wandering around Lima we decided to pack our bags and head south to an oasis in the desert that some other backpackers in Lima were talking about. We decided to mark our last day in Lima by drinking too much and hanging around with locals in sandwich bars. This meant that I didn´t quite enjoy our bus trip down the coast as much as Nadine as I was unable to eat... The ...
Huacachina, Peru nadineandduncanAfter our two days in Lima, we got a bus to a very small town called Pisco. We decided to go there as we had read that you could take a boat tour to Ballestas Island, which is often described as ´The Poor Man´s Galapagos Island´. Well, i guess that´s us! In other words the island is not as good but does have plenty of wildlife to see, such as sea lions and lots of different species of birds.
Pisco itself isn´t a ...
