The Magical Kingdom of Segovia

... leaders, not nearly adults, ignored the commotion and chatted with each other.

I tried to ignore them by searching out the window for serenity hidden in the passing green mountains or blue watery coast. While the children sought enjoyment in annoying each other, I lost myself in the little red-roofed villages sprouting from the hills and the golden hair of the grain fields. The trainride transformed into a fairytale for me as we dipped ...

A day in Segovia

... and text from the time. The text was in Spanish; however the accompanying photographs said it all. - prison camps filled with starving people were some of the images that will remain with me.

After finding the Plaza Mayor we followed the city walls around in the direction of Alcazar - a palace built on a point at the edge of the town. Fortunately this was open and so we explored the castle and learned about some of the its colourful history. The castle looks amazing ...

The first day of our adventure

... 1882 – 1896. In 1951, it became a national historic monument.
Conrad and I paid the extra 3 euros each to go up the tower. 152 steps to the top. Many of the steps were quite tall, so it was a bit of work to go up them (and then back down). From the top of the tower, you can see, as the pamphlet describes, incomparable views of Segovia. The pamphlet described it properly.
After we came down from the tower, Conrad opted to go ...

Segovia, Another Captivating Medevil City

On May 5th, my final day in Madrid, I did a day long excursion to the city of Segovia. Segovia is another ancient Spanish city. Its general theme was religion, religion, relgion. At every turn of the winding streets there were churches, monasteries, convents and cathedrals. On the morning of the 5th I took a train with two Americans I had met in the hostel. We spent the morning exploring the city. Our favorite part of Segovia was the Alcazaar ...

Aqueducts, castles, and cobblestone roads, oh my!

Hello, everyone! Chris and I are in Gimmelwald, Switzerland, but let me tell you about our last day in Spain... On Monday (the 14th), we went to Segovia with Salvationists from Madrid. It's a city about an hour from Madrid. We spent about thirty minutes looking for a parking spot once we got there! The officer driving, Paulene, was pretty impressive in that van - the thing was a tank! You could stand up in it and it could hold 12 passengers. She was maneuvering that thing around tiny ...

Gone hiking and getting lost.

... take in the first place. Arriving tired, thirsty and hungry, the guys running the place served us a three course meal with ice cold beer at midnight. Need I say more!!! After a good nights sleep, we woke up to a glorious and hot day (what did you expect, we're talking the Madrid area here). After breakfast we bought ourselves a map of the area (a good investment :-) and headed for the mountains again, leaving our packs back at the refugio. With plenty of water ...

Sooooo HOT!

... capital cities, it has loads of beautiful, big, grand buildings, so it is good to wander around.... it also has a massive park, we had a walk around the park, ice cream in one hand, camera in the other and then sat down, read, sun bathed (although it was even a bit too hot for that) and slept for about 4 hours, bliss!! That night we went to watch the Australia game with some ozzie friends, was very exciting and i got really into it, they are ...

A Word about the Language

... two movies, Las Lenguas de las Mariposas, which takes place just prior to the civil war, and Bienvenidos Mr. Marshall, which is a really old movie that takes place in the late 40´s. When we watched Mariposas we learned all about Franco and the Spanish Civil War. Bievenidos tackles the aftermath of the civil war in a pretty funny way and Mr. Marshall refers to the Marshall Plan which did not include Spain. We have also learned about boleros (sad love songs), flamenco, and Spanish cooking.
