Preparing for the big trek

18 hours on a bus is never my idea of a fun filled day but that's what we had ahead of us. In fact by the time we reached Puerto Natales we would have been traveling for a total of 30 hours, our longest journey yet. Our friend Nikki had just arrived into Puerto Madryn so we met up for a coffee to catch up and yes hear about her travel plans around New Zealand in January. Whilst we were waiting for our bus to arrive we started talking to an English couple, Adam and Katie, whom we'd seen on our...

Puerto Natales 6th May 2009

... the following morning and then found a hostel for the night. We took a walk around, got a bite to eat, some warm gloves and booked a tour for when we returned to Puerto Natales after our visit to El Calafate. We tried to book a return bus from El Calafate to Puerto Natales but was informed we had to do this when there. With most places shut until 3pm we decided to return ...

... provided more opportunity to meet people and I soon found myself eating meals with a like minded group of backpackers all heading to Puerto Natales with the intention of hiking the Torres Del Paine. There were a lot of Dutch people on the ship, the majority I would say, and our little group had several Dutch guys, an Australian, another British girl and an Israeli girl. It soon became apparant that I did not need to worry about defying the National Park's advice about hiking the trail alone.

... 2800 m high. When we could no longer feel our shins we walked back to a campsite and shared a salty cottage pie and wine with some other trakkers at a refugio. On the easier day two we hiked all the way to the edge of the park, spotting condors and flamingos but unfortunately no pumas, to catch the bus back into town. Another bus day followed as we travelled back over the border to El Calafate (6 hours) then transferred 5 hours later for a bus to El Chaltan (5 hours).

We just got back from Torres Del Paine National Park in southern Patagonia last night. We had arrived in Puerto Natales on Monday and quickly scheduled a tour of the park for Tuesday. And since there is so little to do in the town of Puerto Natales, we decided to book a room at a hotel inside the park for a night (our hostel was so cheap, we left our luggage in our room there, and just took a backpack of necessities to hold us over for ...

... what when wrong. He had a gut instinct not to descend the other side but ignored it. Lessons learned.....If you trek abroad, no matter what, with people or without people, keep your travelers insurance emergency phone number and policy plan in your pocket in case of emergency. This was half the problem. And, always follow your gut instinct. I don´t have the pictures yet for this but will post them later. Sorry its so long just wanted to let everyone know the latest.

... directions. And our camping area was surrounded by grazing horses. Talk about Patagonia, wind, sun, horses and mountains! And it was starting to rain (even though it was sunny)! We quickly decided that sleeping in a tent that was likely to fold and of course leak did not seem like fun. Others who had pitched tents also bailed and moved to the local hotel. We decided to head back to town. On the way to the bus, we saw a group of hikers and as a gust picked ...
