Into the Sacred Valley of the Incas

We had decided to save a bit of money by getting our train tickets from a place called Ollyantaytambo (nearer to Machu Picchu) rather than Cusco (we saved about $70). So, we left Cusco after 3 days, leaving our big rucksacks with the hostal, and headed up to Andes and into the Sacred Valley via Chinchero, and two local buses. The journey was very scenic over the high plains with views of snowy peaks, and down deep into the Sacred Valley, where the Rio Urubamba flows. We got a nice cheap wee h...

... sleeping in a bed and even had access to a (cold) shower. I also got to know the group a little better. We consisted of five English (including two other Leicesterfarians!), one guy from Northern Ireland, an Irish girl, an Aussie and a French guy (affectionately known as "Frenchy"). Everyone was really nice and we all got on well. I did feel a little sorry for Frenchy, though, as his English wasn't great and it was hard for him to communicate in such a large group of English ...

Amazing horseback ride to salt mines, and Moray

... not our fault as we said what we wanted 3 times and pointed to it). She was nice about it and brought us the right thing. But on the check there was a service charge of 7 soles. We thought it was the gratuity, but on the bottom of the check it said "gratuity is not included." According to the server, we were being charged for the food that was sent back that we never ordered and never ate. Kind of annoying, but oh well. Just don't ...

Sacred Valley

... ruthless in trying to exterminate all remnants of indigenous culture in South America, eg the Incas of Peru and beyond. They even found it necessary to rename Qusqu Cuzco. The original Inca name stood for their Kingdom, the centre of their world. The Spanish though fit to call it Cuzco which was essentially a mongrel dog in their language as that is how they saw the Inca people - an ignorant, backward race worthy only of elimination.

A chegada em Limatambo

... los.

... Explorers office closed; so much for checking our luggage, getting directions, or buying maps. We were lucky to get an intelligent person at the information office, however, who was able to give us extremely accurate and helpful information, though we found out later it wasn’t entirely complete. After having dinner at a great polleria (rotisserie chicken restaurant) and debating plans, we headed off to catch yet another night bus. This would be our third ...

The climb to the top felt 10 times steeper than the climb to the entrance of Machu Picchu! Fortunately, there was a supporting rope at the side of the footpath that we could hold onto when going up. At times the steps were very steep that with the support of the rope it felt like I was rock climbing.... Now and again I would ask people that were coming down how much was left to reach the ...

... like a jigsaw puzzle was awe-inspiring.

Our final stop was Chinchero which is another typical Andean village. It’s smaller than Ollantaytambo, but just as touristic. Chinchero has a pretty colonial church built on an Inca temple which is situated just above the square where the local handicraft market is held with indigenous people dressed in their traditional clothes selling their wares. After we were given a small talk whispered to us by the ...
