Vers Copacabana

Belle journee a Copacabana

Ryan and I caught a s/40 night bus from Cuzco to Copacabana, Bolivia, feeling particularly pleased on having haggled the direct luxury bus (which we saw on the picture...) price down. Needless to say, we ended up on a slighty different bus than advertised - before having to change at Puno to a f*cking collectivo. Damn! Still, it was cheap...

Copocabana and the Isla Del Sol

I´m running a little late with the old blog but as I want to make sure that as many pins are in the map as possible, I´m not going to squeeze Copacobana and La Paz into one entry (feel free to skip around). Copacabana is a beautiful town just over the border from Puno. It´s by far the more picturesque side of Lake Titicaca and boy do you get a sense of the scale of the thing. This a lake that is somewhere in the region of 3600 metres above sea level - of non salienated water. It really is bre...

Crossing the Bolivian Boarder

Well here we are in a small, quaint fishing village on the edge of Lago Titicaca. The journey by bus (Collectur) was ok. Going accross the boader was interesting, we had to stop at one office to gain an exit stamp from Peru, then go into another office to get the visa stamped. We then walked 100 yards up the road to Bolivia and got our stamp there before getting back on the bus........all good fun, and theres always that one person from the bus who forgets to the the right stamp and we end up...

Titicaca and the end of our Bolivia experience!

Leaving the chaos of La Paz behind, we hopped on a bus to a little town on the shore of the huge Lake Titicaca - Copacabana. We checked into a cheap hostel after being hounded by people at the bus stop all advertising their special hostels with all the "luxury" extras like toilet paper and blankets. Yep... when you're paying US$7 a night for a double room with en suite, these are luxuries!

What we didn't realise though was that the hostel we spent the first night at was sponsored by ...

Copacabana

We got to Puno bus station at 10am to find the buses leave at 8am and 2pm for Copacabana. So we walked to the local colectivo station which the lady at the bus station said was a bit dangerous but having been through Central America we weren´t bothered. We got 3 colectivos and a rickshaw (which took us about 200 yards before flagging down a colectivo) and crossed the Bolivian border to Copacabana, again on Lake Titicaca. The town was rammed as it was Easter Saturday, the beach was packed and ...

Calderillas

... at the town of Calderilla. The town consisted of a few adobe houses with straw roofs. Each house had its own little farmlet surrounded by stone fences. Most of the houses were in the centre of the large circular valley on a dome of ground about 100 hectares. I spied a track heading up a large hill and thought it would make a nice climb before heading back home. On the way I passed close to a house where a Chapaca Senora was carding some wool. I had a nice ...

Upwards to Tarija

... It is a sight to behold! Well, I took a run down to BsAs to pick up my computer, since I needed my Spanish lessons, Destinos, to study with. It was quite a trip down thru the border xing I had chosen, unbeknownst to me. I want to show you the border crossing at Bermejo, so you can be forewarned. The trip down from the river to BsAs was about 30 hrs on the bus. When I planned this little outing, I didn´t check on that! Onward and upward.
