Spent a few days in the pleasant little town of Banos, famous for its hot baths!!! Íain has been along to try them out but I didn´t fancy the comunal bathing thing and gave it a miss. The town is dominated by an active volcano but we can´t really see it as it is always cloudy and raining. On our first day we discovered the very cheap booze in the supermarket so we spent our second day recovering from an evening of socialising! Third day we took a chiva tour to La Ruta de las Cascadas - a seri...

Banos, Ecuador mrsplaying_deadAlthough we had originally planned on studying Spanish further south in Ecuador, when we arrived at the pretty little picturesque town of Baños, we realised that this would be an ideal location. Baños is nestled in a luscious valley surrounded by two imposing mountains and an extremely active volcano. Since we were staying here for a considerable time, it was important for us to find a decent hostel and the newly opened Hostal Chimenea ticked all of the boxes. Everything was fantatstic about ...
Banos, Ecuador pauline_callumArrived in Banos on a hot afternoon after a few people suggested heading here from nearby Puyo! travelled the road to Banos a few times on the buses, but apparently you can ride on the road and visit all the amazing waterfalls along the track...so fresh faced and excited about a hot shower I head to my hostel (after two weeks of cold showers and very muddy hot days you can image how the prospect of being clean felt and I was hoping it actually might put the pleasure back in showering...one m...
Banos, Ecuador samgare After a teary departure from my family in Quito I jumped on a bus to Baños...
Baños is a 3 hour bus trip south of Quito...its a little town (however much larger than Mindo) that is a hightlight for locals and tourists alike. Its full of great food, music, markets...but its best known for its location and hot springs. Its near the Jungle, Rivers, Waterfalls and much more. The hot springs were great, very relaxing...but for the most part Baños is a hive of activity, there are many action...
Today was a travel and organisation day sorting out what I´m going to do for my remaining days in Ecuador. I travelled from Quito to Baños (or the bathroom)!
Bizarre that it cost me 10 dollars to go 15km to Quito´s shiny new bus terminal and then 3.50 dollars to get a bus to Banos that last 150km and 3.5 hours.
Getting the long distance coach wasn´t quite as intimidating or prosaic as expected and managed to poo poo the old want to put your bag on the top deck trick.
Bano...

... have to say. Our guide then asks us to massage our bowels (What!!) presumably in preparation for a red hot poker, and then shows me as apparently im not being vigorous enough (dont worry it was per abdomen). Fortunately we survive and it turns out this is our height of torture, as we are led back for a final baking, with tails between our legs but glad to be alive. Karma has wonderful timing however, and my vigorous bowel ...
Banos, Ecuador al-lucy-lost... to purge (the purge to cleanse oneself before ascending to heaven, as the shaman told us). Chris was the first to ralph, followed by (a dramatically hurling) Phil, and eventually Lina; I was the only one to not throw up (iron stomach, you know). Unfortunately, none of us had quite the visual, amazing, talk-to-gods experience we were anticipating. Given the strong body feeling we all did have, the caapi definitely was present, but the chacruna or chaliponga leaves ...
Banos, Ecuador dan_the_man... to taste different cuisines when you're traveling).

Walked around the mountain encircling Banos the following day, which took three hours. I was very proud of myself as I wouldn't call myself one of life's hikers, so I deservedly took another soak in the spa in the afternoon!

One of the hostel owners threatened to take me dancing that night so I hid in my room watching cable (English-speaking TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and the next day sloped off to Riobamba!
Banos, Ecuador lizjb... in the park is a couple of hundred feet out but who's counting!

To my avid fans the Internet in Quito is dire, I am having problems uploading photos, so rather than publish without I´ll hold for now and publish as I get the photos loaded.

Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.
Quito, Ecuador pearcy... up to the top. Talk about steep and muddy! It was an adventure just getting up to the top. But, even more astounding was the realization that on this narrow vertical path completely muddy and with sometimes barely a place to grab a hold and place your foot there were horses and people traversing daily with heavy loads. In fact, it turns out there was a village at the top of the mountain and ...
