Avenida Santander San Pedro La Laguna, Lake Atitlan, Western Highlands, Guatemala
From Antigua I headed to San Pedro on the shores of Lago Atitlan. I got a bus to Panajahel on one side of the lake then took a boat across to SP. It was late and dark when I arrived there. When that happens I usually take the first accomodation I find and change the next day if itīs bad. Rather than sitting in my room and feeling sorry for myself I headed out for a wander round the town. I came across a bar, The Allegre, showing a movie so headed inside to check it out. I never got as far as ...
San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala alanbruceAt the moment we're finishing 4 lazy days in San Pedro on Lake Atitlan. Our $4 a night room with a view at the Hotel San Francisco is perfectly nice in a half finished sort of way. Tree branches wired to cement posts serve as railings on the balcony, the doorknob is missing, the curtain hangs on a string between two nails, about what you all should expect from our lodging choices by now. But it is $4 a night and has a hot shower (sort of). What more do you really need? San Pedro is an anomaly...
San Pedro, Guatemala ericsItīs been just about one week since I arrived in San Pedro. Upon my arrival I checked in at the Hotel San Francisco which is a nice place to stay. Clean rooms with shared showers for Q30 a night. That is about $3.75 a night. The shared showers are interesting as the shower shares the same space as the toilet but I adjusted to this pretty quickly. Definitely bring or purchase flip flops. This is an absolutely beautiful area. The lake and volcanoes are amazing. Many of the flowers are similar ...
San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala muddyfeetSan Pedro La Laguna is only a few kilometers around the lake from Satiago Atitlan but the similarity stops at their close proximity to one another. San Pedro has all the bars and restaurants of Panajachel but in a less touristy setting. From our hotel balcony we have a cracking view of the lake and its surrounding villages. This is by far the best view we have had the pleasure of seeing every morning when we wake up. It's great to relax here before heading out into town. Volcan San Pedro is 3...
San Pedro La Laguna, Western Highlands, Guatemala thedidgeridude... Nose. Can you guess what that rock formation looks like? The hike up was grueling and I didnīt wear the appropriate footware. It was worth it because at the top was a group of local Mayans performing some kind of ceremony. They were speaking Tzútujil, the local Mayan dialect so I didnīt even have a chance at understanding. A woman was leading the ceremony and she talked from across an open fire fueled by tree ...
San Pedro La Laguna, Western Highlands, Guatemala tonka_eng... think of plus some you can’t. The Wal-Mart is called Hiper Paiz but it is owned by Wal-Mart and there are 2 of them the other one is in Zona 3
They have a traditional market that is not for the faint hearted you can by anything there. Too tell what kind of meat you are buying they are nice enough to put the head of the animals on display for you. It is so big I got lost in it and it took me an hour to find my way out. I don’t have many photo of it now however I will.
... to sleep – but we were definitely not heading to the rave and 12 oclock is a late night for us!!!
Lessons learned –
Anwen when tipsy has a tendancy to mis-hear and got very excited by the possibility of paragliding for $7 dollars. Obviously it was $70 which she was much less impressed with. I however would NOT have been going paragliding for $7 (but if we’d heard about it sooner and thought about would have been keen for $70!)
... tasteless, and a large plate of grilled chicken, half and avocado, rice, vegetables all for 20Qs or $2.40. So far no disasters on the eating front or should I say post eating front.
Xela is the second largest town in Guatemala, and sprawls out, however the westerner end with a myriad of Spanish schools, catering for the evergrowing numbers of foreigners who want to learn in a slightly authentic environment, seems pretty self contained and small. The streets ...
... chairs, tables and rabid dogs and flies we were set. The vegetarian dish was about $1.50 for a full plate of rice, beans and veggies. We continued shopping and I bought a ceramic Mayan man and a few scarves. The sky looked a little ominous - impending doom! So we looked for a bar to hide in and just as it started spitting we found one and it was lucky we had. It came down in a torrential pour, floods were forming, lightening and thunder - people were ...
San Jorge La Laguna, Sololá, Guatemala chooklotto... b r>
During this fortnight, our days consisted of waking up to the glorious vista, trotting off to Spanish school for four hours, coming home to do homework during the hottest part of the day, then either relaxing on our rooftop balcony with litro bottles of ice-cold Gallo cervezas taking in the view or heading to The Alegre for an afternoon of football and litro bottles of ice-cold Gallo cervezas.
