We think we have solved the riddle of the crops in the field which I called oats. They were beans. We have seen fields with green/yellowing leaved plants which we knew were beans but the brown stalked plants had us beaten. Today we could stop and look closely - they were beans ready for harvesting. There are obviously different varieties planted as some are quite a golden colour while others are a straw brown.
Tomorrow, we head for St Louis and north or north east.
Arrived early and got our pick of sites. We got this one right on the lake. At dusk, the family of skunks would come out to enjoy the fallen crab apples on the tree in our site. The sunsets were gorgeous! We met Puff the Purple Dragon on the beach! Loved the water tower.
Today was a welcome rest day. We now head into the hills of Kentucky. Some of us patronized the local bike shops and checked and adjusted our machines for the hills to come. I visited bike shops, thrift store, the local library and generally cruised around town looking for history. We ventured out of Chester this morning competing for space on the highway for 8 miles with monstrous coal trucks!!! As we've travelled further south the weather has been getting progressively hotter so we decided to just do a short walk in the Pere Marquette State Park before we left rather than a long one.
