From Memphis (or rather Marianna), we journeyed down the Mississippi, reading to one another occasionally from Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi" for a touch of culture. For much of the way, we knew that the great river was somewhere to our left, but sadly out of site. The need for levees, protecting property and farmland along the river banks is obviously greater than the need to satisfy tourists with a grand view as they travel southwards. Still, the farmland is a glorious site in itsel...

I STAYED AT THE HOLIDAY INN, EXPRESS ON SOUTH FRONTAGE ROAD WHEN I WAS IN VICKSBURG.
THIS WAS THE CLEANEST AND MOST PROFESSIONAL ATMOSPHERE, AND HAD A GREAT STAFF.
THE ROOMS ARE VERY COMFORTABLE. VERY HELPFUL STAFF AND THEY HAVE A BUSINESS CENTER, EXERCISE ROOM AND A VERY CLEAN AND EXCELLENT BREAKFAST AREA.

Vicksburg, Mississippi, United States rogersusieq... was visiting the Wormslow Plantation. Wormslow has a mile and a half Oak Lane driveway onto the plantation. The driveway is called Oak Lane due to the towering oak trees draped in Spanish Moss that form a canopy over the drive. We were treated to a colonial life reenactment with a blacksmith, weaver, gunsmith and smelter. We finish our visit with dinner at The Pirates House Restaurant established in 1753. The food and atmosphere is well worth a visit.

... of synthetic chemicals proportionately over the rest of the country. Go Figure! So I bike the 75 miles or so between Vicksburg and Natchez in 8 hours. I would say thats making steam. I run across two bicycling young ladies headed to Nashville from Naw'lins. [names to be added] I wanted to persuaded them to come with me, but I mean, come on... So I am hitting the wall by the time MM 15 comes up, and worse ...
Vicksburg, Mississippi, United States jblankissuper... as it is to me, always check the connector BEFORE you unpack and get settled in the room. The little clip that gives a proper connection seems to get broken off by careless people. Request a different room unless the hotel has a Plan B. The Holiday Inn & Suites had no Plan B for us. Vicksburg, Mississippi, United States roundamerica... that we could easily make it to Vicksburg in one day, so we changed the reservations. We were in four states today. I bet you can't guess the fourth one??? The Hampton Inn here in Vicksburg is better than most. We decided that it is for the folks comming to see the battlefields. They are right next door...... I will try to up load a few photos.
Vicksburg, Mississippi, United States bobcoyle... and lots of statues, and monuments, the trenches are all still apparent. The visit was great but the heat was tremendous, and it was hard to imagine how the soldiers lived in the heat, let alone the cannon fire and rifle shot. We intend to spend the next few days camping along the Natchez Trace, and we doubt if we will have internet for quite a few days, we are slowly heading towards Nashville, bring on the music!!!
Vicksburg, Mississippi, United States brentandjo... stuff in the French Quarter. This included several Abita Ambers at the bar in Maspero's, dinner at the Gumbo Shop, random strolling in the Quarter. Nice to be back. The Quarter received little damage during Katrina. Businesses were closed, there was small amounts of flooding and general storm damage but for the most part, places are open for business. However, for a Friday night, it was easy to tell that the crowds were lacking.
Vicksburg, Mississippi, United States stephtodd... Visitors can even splash in the water flowing though the model. For $2 / person we rented 2 paddle boats for half an hour and paddled around the "Gulf of Mexico." It was tranquil. ** Be aware -- the dark bricks around the 'river' are VERY HOT, so kids should wear swim shoes or have someone help them around the few walkways over the water. Last time, I developed a rash on my lower legs after walking in the water, so this time, we all rinsed off with tap water when ...
