The light at the end of the visa tunnel
When we arrived on our flight back from Japan we could see light flashes as we started to descend. Once on the ground you could hear all the fireworks going off to signify the start of the Chinese New Year. We landed around 10:30pm but had to wait in the freezing cold until midnight to get a taxi. When we did we were treated to a fireworks display …
Beginnning of a great adventure...
First entry!
My brother and I left Pierre-Elliot Trudeau airport at 7:30 AM and got to Toronto airport at 8:45 AM. From Toronto, it took us about 16 hours to get to Hong Kong. What a long flight! Thankfully, on the airplane, there was a great selection of movies, series, documentaries...
We got to the Hong Kong airport at 1:30 …
McDonalds anyone?
Having spent a casual 16 or so hours on a train this morning we woke up in Hong Kong! After various official checks and the inevitable queueing we finally boarded the MTR (Hong Kong's underground) and quickly found our wat to Chungking Mansions. We had been warned by a fellow traveller to stear well clear of here but thought we were of hardier …
I [heart] Hong Kong
Only the occasional horking of a man in the immigration line disturbs the organized, structured civilization that welcomes me at Hong Kong airport. Once out of the airport, I am surprised to find that people don't all speak English. My bus driver is the sweetest, but doesn’t understand a word. Neither do I. It all seems simple enough. I know …
Barry's beloved city
We arrived in Hong Kong after our 26 hour bus trip from Hanoi. We took the CTS bus from the border into the city. Driving through Hong Kong for the first time was quite daunting. The buildings are massive, towering over the streets below. We were so tired at this stage and could not wait to get to our hostel. We had no idea where we were supposed …

The directions to the hostel were appalling and other people I met who stayed there agreed. The bedrooms and bathroom (just the one!) were not particularly clean. The wifi was slow and the computers were not very often on. The staff were helpful but the accommodation left much to be desired.

Apparently this is the place to be if you are in town and on a budget. It was clean and friendly and well managed. My 3-bed dorm had one of the hardest beds I've ever slept on (and I do like it hard). The air was super stuffy and when the AC was on, some restaurant's kitchen smell wafted into the room. Perfect location!
I am not able to compare to other budget places in town. Based on other travelers reviews, there isn't much better. Verdict: It's fine and I'd go again.
