Hue to Hanoi
Today was (again) very hot and busy for us. We were ready to go with all of our belongings by 8 am for yet another bus ride with our not so favorite honking driver. Luckily it was just a short distance to the Citadel. It encompassed the Imperial Enclosure and the Forbidden City. I won't bore you with the details but we were there for almost 2 hours …
Hanoi - arrival and food ;-)
Our guide was waiting for us - hooray ! Typical - we were told we didn't need photos for our visas but guess what - we did!!! Luckily, Hien, our guide, sorted this at immigration so we had a rush job done by a lady in uniform $2 per person! then we were on our way- to the tour operators office so we could pay her all the lovely USD we had in our …
Our return to Hanoi :-)
Awake early 0600 - as music and the morning new bulletin was broadcast to the whole village!! Fabulous! So got up and went for breakfast - not sure why we bothered to do that either!! Our journey today went via the largest pagoda in Vietnam - to reach this we had to go down the worst roads ever! The pagoda was in fact 3 pagodas up a very steep hill …
An Intrepid Ending
Before going back to Hanoi, seven of us decided to see a bit more of Cat Ba Island. We started by seeing yet another set of caves. But these were different. In a sense they were a cross between the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Surprising Caves from yesterday. The caves were used over 40 years ago as one of the main strongholds for the North Vietnamese …
Tribal Bride
My Ngoc Hotel Sore ass from motorcycle. Wondered if we were going to crash and my fleece was going to melt into my skin. Crossed a river on the bike. Totally random town, missed an offer to marry a local tribal chief. Maybe next time?

Historical Traveler Reviews Hong Ngoc Dynastie Hotel Hanoi
Clean, but hard bed.
Spent one night here -- an OK hotel with good location and helpful staff. The bed was pretty hard, and the room smelled liked incense -- but it was clean and serviceable. Breakfast was so-so.
No llegué a ver ninguna hormiga.
Hong Ngoc just fine
We just stayed at the Hong Ngoc 1 in December, and it certainly did have an elevator--off of the dining room. We liked the hotel, which had free internet (although slow) and a nice buffet breakfast. The front rooms are light but very noisy with all the motorbike horns--use earplugs, at least until the middle of the night. The back rooms are dark and a little depressing. But all are clean and with nice bathrooms and furniture. The staff is very willing to help. I didn't see any ants.
Nice and friendly, but lack of elevator
This hotel was very nice, and had an even nicer staff. The hotel is located right in the heart of the French Quarter, and by tons of good restraurants (although the Garden Restaurant next door is no good, so venture out just a bit farther). The pizza place just down the street is wonderful, and has a mean lunch buffet special.... Pepperionis is the name.
As far as the room went, well... the bathroom had tiny ants crawling around, but i didnt see any outside the bathroom. Other than the not so nice bathroom (small shower, no good sink), the room was clean, and had surdy furniture and a nice feel to it. Small beds, though.
Warning to those who hate stairs..... this hotel has no elevator, and has nearly 8 floors. So beware if you plan to stay here, and request a room on a low floor. The stairs get a bit tiring to walk up. But if you dont mind stairs, it does offer a charm to the old style of the hotel.
This hotel has a wonderful buffet breakfast included in the price, as well as free internet. If you dont mind a few ants, stay here.
A Find
Our Vietnam based travel agent booked us into this hotel and could not have been more pleased. Clean, nicely decorated with balcony, spacious room & bath with friendly, helpful staff.
Very Highly Recommended
We stayed at the Hong Ngoc hotel the last few days of our trip to SE Asia and were really taken with the place. It was definitely the best value of any hotel we stayed in during our three week vacation. The huge double room included lovely, classy furniture (even a large round table for room service and writing desk)...all exquisite, esp. for a hotel in this price range. The buffet breakfast, included in the price, was delightful, and in the evenings, the restaurant features live traditional Vietnamese music. There is no such thing as a quiet room in the old city of Ha Noi, perhaps, so don't expect it - but we were on the 5th floor, and it wasn't so bad (as our previous hotel, anyway). And the staff: outstanding! Friendly, gractious, will bend over backwards to insure a good stay.
