Walking the river & checkin' out other places
Well, I had a spare weekend in the middle of a business trip to the Dallas area and decided to make a "short" run down to San Antonio to check out the Riverwalk, the Alamo, and the old neighborhoods where we lived back in the day. I got around to the old elementary school and over by where a couple of the old houses were (only one of them is still …
San Antonio
... I realized that they were regular trucks on an overpass. Phew..!
Morning sky was overcast although the temperature didn't drop. San Antonio downtown is big just like everything else in Texas. Its very classy though and easy to walk around. I went to the Alamo plaza. Alamo was the second catholic mission in Texas that later served as a fort when ...

... Highway 90 runs along the Mexican Border for a couple hundred kilometres. The following section of the journey was on a spectacular desert road that appeared to go on forever. There was very little traffic for the rest of the day; it was not unusual to travel for 20 minutes without seeing another vehicle. This, of course, does not include Border Patrol pickup trucks. The fence and the gravel/stone road continued for hundreds of kilometres. Several times I passed ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Homewood Suites by Hilton San Antonio-Riverwalk/Downtown
Awful Experience!
My family wanted to stay on the Riverwalk but we were limited on funds. A family member found Homewood Suites at a reasonable rate. We arrived late afternoon and everything seemed fine. We attended the social which was very nice. At four a.m. an alarm went off and after futher investigation we discovered it was the trash truck. This occured all three nights we stayed at the hotel. I talked to other guests at the hotel and they had the same complaint. The maid did not change the sheets on one of the beds nor did she take out the trash. Guest in the next room were excessively loud and security was called. After calling the front desk three times and no action being taking we called the San Antonio Police and reported a disturbance call. The police finally quieted the guest next door at 2:00 a.m.
Too good to be true!
I researched this website and thought Homewood Suites would be a perfect place to stay. It was located on the Riverwalk, the breakfast and social sounded suburb! The breakfast was fair but the social was deceiving. They serve margaritas during the social which all three nights were melted and the food was cold. The sanitation department picked up trash every morning at 4:00 a.m. Not that this was bad enough but the alarm on the trash truck sounded for 5 minutes while the truck was emptying the dumpsters. A member of our party left her wedding band set on the vanity in the bathroom so she would not loose it in the pool and the maid stole the ring when she came to clean the room. The manager was confronted immediately and he said he would talk to the employee but the hotel had no insurance to cover the cost of the ring. We asked for a refund on our room and was refused by management. They said if we did not pay for our stay they would file criminal charges against us. There were other more expensive hotels on the riverwalk but we were trying to save money. Homewood Suites is the least expensive hotel on the riverwalk but remember you get what you pay for!
Nice place
What a great place to stay. I really enjoyed the suites. Large room and seperate living quarters. Definitely worth the money. It made my stay at San Antonio relaxing. Pool is small but okay for kids.
Great Location & Vacation
We chose the Homewood Suites based on reviews we'd read on this site and were not disappointed. We flew into San Antonio and did not rent a car, so we wanted a hotel within walking distance of most attractions. The hotel is at the very end/beginning of the River Walk, so it's close enough to get where you want, but away from the bustle and noise. We requested a King non-smoking, but received a Queen non-smoking suite which was sufficient. The pool is extremely small (not big enough to even swim), but that wasn't a factor for us. There is a bus stop and a streetcar stop right outside the hotel. The breakfast included scrambled eggs and alternated between bacon and sausage. There were toast, waffles, yogurt, fruit and cereal. The evening reception had a small salad bar and rotating entrees. Most were decent, but not spectacular. There were frozen margaritas, soda and beer on tap.We had two minor problems with our room (a lamp that wouldn't work & trouble with the data port). Both times maintenance was there immediately after we called. We found the visitor's center across from the Alamo to be very helpful if you're considering riding the local bus system. They provided us with schedules and directed us to the various sites. The bus drivers are also helpful if you let them know your destination.Overall, we were very pleased with our San Antonio vacation.
Perfect Vacation Site
This place was awesome. We were only going to stay one night and stayed for four!!!! Very well worth the money and VERY accomadating. Walking distance within everything. Went to Howl At The Moon as suggested by another viewer. What a hoot!!! Write for San Antonio Visitors Guide, lots of coupons and also get an Entertainment Book. Great Values. Would definetly go back.
Great suite on the Riverwalk!
Great suite hotel to stay on the Riverwalk.Best part is the door between the rooms, lots ofprivacy if you need it.Fabulous breakfast in the morning. And, if you want to to have drinks and snacks later in the day, the Hilton Homewood suites offer that too.Very clean and friendly hotel. San Antonio was a very fun place to visit. While you're there, the adults in your group should visit "Howl on the Moon" which is a singalong piano bar. Much fun!
Great Service, Great Value
Homewood Suites was a great home away from home for a recent vacation. The hotel is on a quiet section of the Riverwalk--walk just a moment or two and you're in the middle of all the restaurants, clubs and attractions. The huge lobby is the center of it all. They serve a great continental breakfast, you can even make your own waffles! Managers happy hour includes great finger foods and margaritas (soda, too). This gave us the chance to meet other wonderful guests. Get a window seat in the lobby--you can wave to the tourists on the Riverwalk boat tour. The rooms are spacious, the kitchens well equipped. The hotel even offers a grocery shopping service so you can stock your fridge. This might be a good idea, because there isn't a restaurant in the hotel, and there aren't many alternatives if you're a late night snacker. (The hotel staff, however, knows all the places that deliver food late at night!)The staff was great--knowledgeable, good humored, and very pleasant. They have all the information you need to make your trip to San Antonio a memorable one. I can't wait to go back.
Stay Here!!
We have stayed at the Homewood twice while visiting San Antonio. It is an awsome hotel because it is right on the River Walk, the rooms are spacious with great service. The breakfast and happy hour are fantastic. Not to mention the room that they serve breakfast and happy hour overlook the river. Recently I was in San Antonio for a convention and did not get my reservation in soon enough at the Homewood and had to stay at a different hotel and let me tell you, my visit was not nearly as pleasent as it was when I get to stay at the Homewood. Other hotels don't compaire in quality or service to this one.
You don't always get what you want
My wife and I recently went to San Antonio to visit a son at Fort Sam Houston. Since I was not from the area I checked Expedia (and then ...) to see what Hotels would be available in San Antonio close to the River Walk. We selected the Homewood Suites based on price and location. We requested a King Suite with a King or Queen size bed, non-smoking. We received our confirmation thinking that we had the room we requested. Since things don't always go as planned we called Homewood Suites to verifiy our room. They told us we had a King Suite-Smoking. We said we did not want smoking. We called Expedia and said that we wanted King Suite, Non-Smoking and they agreed that what we requested. They were going to notify Homewood Suites of our request. We got to Homewood Suites and found out that we had 2 double beds (we don't even sleep in a double bed at home). We discussed the mix up with the Homewood Suites nighttime manager and he said that just be cause we requested a certain room did not mean that what we would get. Expedia & ... did not tell me that I might be getting something other than what I requested. The nighttime manager made me aware that this is a common problem for people who go thru the Internet. If this is common the hotels should get with the Internet people to make sure everyone understands the limitations. So much for the bad news. The stay, location, breakfast & evening social was great.
Homewood Suites River Walk
I recently stayed at the Homewood Suites on the River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. I have to say, I really enjoyed my stay. The staff was awsome and the hotel is in a great location (right on the River Walk). My suite was large and well appointed. They offer a complimentary breakfast that was fabulous and also have an evening social where they even served free Margaritas. You cannot beat this hotel for the price you pay. What a great value. I know where I will stay next time in San Antonio.
