A respectable place to stay with kids however family food choices are limited. No rooms with a good view of the ocean-side community as the location is not within walking distance to the ocean. Location is a short drive to the Torrey Pines golf course. We arrived late evening and just after 9pm we asked the hotel staff to direct us to family-friendly dining and we were not provide with any decent options.
Hotel itself was they typical Homewood Suites with two bedroom options and a sofa-pullout, idea for a larger family with teen kids.
Lobby/dining area was nice as was the pool area. Biggest issue were the showers both contained stained/dirty shower curtains. We took showers late the first night so they didn't get changed until the next morning, however the housekeeping staff expressed plenty of regret about the issue and thoroughly cleaned the showers and the room.

Historical Traveler Reviews Homewood Suites By Hilton San Diego-Del Mar
Stayed here for 3 nights as a base for San Diego. Very new hotel, biased toward the business traveller, but ideal for families. We had a 2-bedroom suite, one room with a king and one with 2 queens. The room was top quality, and very clean - no mean feat given its size. The buffet breakfast was exceptional - the only gripe would be that they need more waffle makers! The pool & hot tub were very welcome. Staff was excellent (and mostly quite young!) with a true appreciation of customer service. The hotel is about 30 mins from Sea World and 40 mins from the Zoo. Would definitely recommend for families with children as well as business travellers.
Nice hotel and spacious rooms.
We have previously stayed in a Homewood Suites in the Orlando area near Disney World and decided to give this location a try. We stayed here for 3 nights. The rooms here are smaller than the FL ones, but nevertheless more spacious than most typical hotel rooms. It's always nice to have a full kitchen and separate living room from the bedroom area. The hotel was clean and staff was friendly. The location is on the outskirts of the city, but in a very nice area, and just a short drive on the freeway to the inner city or Sea World. It is very close to LaJolla beach. Getting to the hotel from I5 is a little bit of a work around, but not difficult after you have done it once. It's a short drive to a shopping center that has restaurants and movie theaters. The breakfasts were very good and the entrees changed somewhat each day. I would agree with some other reviewers, that noise did travel through the walls somewhat. I could hear a woman next door coughing in the middle of the night, although the noise is not unbearable by any means. The hotel grounds itself are very quiet. An ice machine was only available on the first floor near the check-in desk, and none were available to my knowledge, on the upper floors. A little pricey, but so are most of the hotels in San Diego any more. Unfortunately, I think the hotels in this area are getting a little too agressive on their pricing. I would consider staying here again, although I would also consider renting a beach house with friends or family since the difference in cost, when divided up, would be comparable.
VERY NICE, CLEAN PLACE--- ENJOYED THE STAY !
My wife, 3 yr old, and myself stayed here for a few nights in July 2006. we liked the hotel very much. The common areas as wella s the hotel itself were very clean and welcoming. There was a great AM breakfast served every morning. Thye only possible criticism here is that they close the serving area exactly at the cut off time (varies by day of the week). So, if you go back for another bowl of cereal or muffin, and it's even a minute past the end time you are out of luck. There was also a reception that includes a free dinner buffet every Mon-Thu. We had some excellent chinese food and a nice poolisde bbq too while visiting. The room itslef was clean and comfortable. We had a full kitchen with all teh dishes u could ever need. Full fridge too... very nice, clean and ready to use. Free parking was a plus, as well as the fact that we could part just a few spaces from teh door to our room. We were on the 3rd floor, and did hear a few people walking on the floor above us. If you are a very light sleeper then beware. We were ok once we dozedoff. Also, you may hear doors closing down the hall from other rooms,a s the doors are heavy and hte walkways get lots of traffic in teh mornings. Overall I loved it. By the way, I used a great wervice that I only heard about from another guest... they will do your grocery shopping too. Just tell em what u need, and they will shop and delvier to you, and bill to your room. Who knew!. We loved it, and would stay again (but we would ask for the 4th floor next time!). Enjoy San Diego in style with a stay at the wonderful Homewood Suites Sand Diego. PS- it was 15 minutes to Sea World, and 20 to the S.D. Zoo... and only 5 minutes to the BEACH!
One of the Best Hotels I've Stayed In
The Homewood Suites in Del Mar is a terrific hotel! It is in a great San Diego location in beautiful Del Mar and conveniently close to I-5 which takes you to most of the major tourist attractions. The price was competitive with other area hotels. The hotel was clean and comfortable. Our queen suite was beautifully decorated and clean, had a full kitchen, a comfortable bed with many throw pillows and a down comforter, and a pull out bed in the couch (which we never used). The room was cleaned promptly each day by the housekeeping staff and the rest of the hotel staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The pool area was small but nice and clean as well. The food service was especially impressive. Upon check-in, the hotel staff brings you a "Welcome Home" gift bag full of snacks. The continental breakfast each day is probably the best I've had at a hotel with the traditional cereals, fruits, and muffins but also belgian waffles, eggs, bacon, and potatoes each day. We were additionally surprised by the complimentary DINNER served to guests on Mondays through Thursdays on the patio. The hotel provides you with a monthly menu and the dinners are things like barbecue, spaghetti, beef stew, etc. Also, beer and wine are complimentary for guests at these dinners. What a great value for a family on vacation! There is also the equivalent of a full convenient store in the hotel which was very useful. As I said, this was a fantastic hotel that I would definitely stay in again as well as in other cities. You can't go wrong here!
Coming Back Here For Sure!!!
We are coming bck here for sure!
We spent two nights here at Homewood Suites Del Mar while on a weekend vacation to Legoland and San Diego. The prices and package of hotel deals in San Diego was outrageous so we decided to try on the outskirts of the city. What a fabulous choice!!! First of all, this hotel is owned by Hilton, so we knew we should expect quality.
We were right in between San Diego and Carlsbad. The hotel is right off of the freeway and so you just hop on the freeway and you're in San Diego within 10-15 minutes and in Carlsbad/Legoland within 15 minutes. It is located in very upscale, posh Del Mar. The neighborhood is very safe and clean. You will need a car to get around here as it is not located near major landmarks.
We paid $150 per night and it was well worth the price. We booked a 2 room suite that was huge and gorgeous. They gave us a great corner room location. The kitchen has pergo wood floors and modern appliances. There was a pull out couch/bed in the front room and a huge bedroom with either 1 king or 2 queen beds. We never felt as if we were walking on top of each other in this room because there was so much space. The beds were so comfortable and plush with lots of pillows. The bathroom was a good size with a countertop/vanity outside of the bathroom which we loved so someone could be showering while the other person could actually be getting ready for the day.
The staff at the hotel was so friendly and welcoming. We were looking for directions to various locations and they were very accomodating and helpful in looking up addresses, directions, etc. We felt very welcomed and appreciated their hospitality.
We were traveling with our 3 small children and the hotel was very accomodating to families as well as business travelers as well as couples traveling alone. There definitely was a wide mix of people staying at this hotel.
The hotel offers a free daily breakfast that was delicious. Not "continental" at all but a full breakfast with waffles, eggs, sausage, cereal, yogurt, baked goods, coffee, you name it. It was a great bonus to this hotel.
In response to someone else's previous review about hearing their neighbors' noises, occassionally we did hear the water running in the room next door, but that was all. It wasn't loud or bothersome at all. So that was not a problem for us at all.
Bottom line: whenever we go to San Diego or Carlsbad or Oceanside, we will never stay anywhere else than Homewood Suites Del Mar. You can't go wrong here and it will make your trip a great one! Happy traveling!
Great Value - Perfect Home Base
I loved this hotel. Everyone is very friendly. Service is excellent. We had a 2 bedroom suite and it was huge - three seperate, full size rooms in all.
The free meals were a pleasant surprise. The breakfast was better than most free breakfasts at other hotels. But FREE DINNER??? Yes, Monday through Thursday, they dish up a full free dinner. After long days at Seaworld/Zoo/etc., it was great to come back to the hotel and eat with no hassle and no cost. Each night was a different entree (no choices) with a salad and free wine and beer. (entrees while we were there: lasagne, baked potato bar, pasta bar, hamburger/chicken/hotdog cookout).
This hotel is in Del Mar, approx. 20 minutes from the major attractions, 10 minutes from the beach. Nothing is within walking distance (it is surrounded by suburban businesses), but everything is only a short drive away.
I highly recommend this hotel.
We just spent 6 days at the Homewood Suites in San Diego /Del mar. We greatly enjoyed our stay. The hotel was very clean and maintained. Housekeeping did a great job. The hotel had a new interior since the hotel was recently built.
The hotel was also in a great location. We went to sea world, lego land, and the zoo. The hotel was located so it was easy to get on and off the highways.
The hotel offered complimentary meals. We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast complimentary of the hotel. You could choose from eggs, bacon, cereal , bagels, and waffles. My kids especially enjoyed the muffins that were just made. They were still warm. On Monday through Thurs. they also served dinner that was complimentary too. The hotel also had a full refrigerator, stove, and microwave. It was nice to be able to fix snacks, and other meals conveniently in the hotel with young children.
It was also very quiet. Far enough from the highway so you did not hear any noise. We were there from 7/29/-8/3. and we rarely heard any neighbors. We would love to stay there again and we would greatly recommend this hotel.
You Can Hear Your Neighbors...
Stayed at the Homewood Suites, a new hotel that is billed as catering to the business traveler. The hotel is NOT located in Del Mar; it is located in Torrey Hills, a business park area in the Carmel Valley vicinity. You will NOT be near the beach, shopping, supermarkets, gas stations, etc. It is NOT an easy on/easy off from I5; It is a maze-like route through concrete barrier construction near I805 before you even reach the left turn for Sorrento Valley Road. It is a good-sized 2 room suite with a comfortable bed, full refrigerator, 2 burner cooktop, full size microwave, small food prep area and table seating. The bathroom is smaller than most with the only sink located outside the bathroom in a vanity alcove. My biggest complaint is the THIN walls. You can hear when occupants of other rooms are walking, talking, using the shower, running the water, flushing the toilet. This is extremely annoying but typical of the new construction these days. You can also hear the cars and trucks traveling on the road. The road is not extremely busy, but the noise is well heard nonetheless. If you stay here, get a room on the top floor (then you'll be the one clomping around and annoying those beneath you, but at least you won't hear anyone except those on the left and right of you) and not facing the roadway (so you won't have the road noise). The buffet breakfast was typical with a few hot items added. Not the best, but not the worst and if you are a business traveler and keeping typical business hours then you probably won't hear the other occupants as you'll already be up and making similar noises yourself. I don't recommend for leisure travelers or beach-goers.
Homewood Suites Rocks!
I loved this hotel..
The rooms were very beautiful and large. The breakfast was magnificent and the hotel is located at a prime location. The service is excellent and quick. The entire propery itself is also very beautiful.
Homewood Suites Del Mar is well worth the money.
Give them a try....
We stayed at the Homewood Suites in Del Mar for 5 nights from June 4-June 9 and we had some "issues" but the hotel had only been open for 4 days. We were traveling with two children ages 6 and 8 so the location is convenient to all the major attractions such as Legoland and the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, however it is in a residential/business park so it's very peaceful. The complimentary hot breakfasts and evening reception meals were adequate but nothing exceptional. The beds were very comfortable, with down comforters and nice fluffy pillows. The pool was small but heated and there was a hot tub as well. The Hilton website says it's three miles from Del Mar Beach but it seemed further than that, it would take us around twenty minutes to drive to the beach. I would recommend giving this place a try. We honestly didn't have the best experience but I believe that in time it will be a great place to stay.

We slept in a bit this morning before packing the car to depart from our mobile home hotel on the Naval base of El Centro. Family time in San Diego, it was all about the kids today.
