After listening to a song called "We're all free (to use sunscreen)" (or something like that), it hit me.
I forgot my climbing shoes in Sanford. Minor detour and I was back on course to Winston-Salem. NPR was playing a show from 2000 when Chris Thile was 19 (and Randy Newman was throwing down songs about "scuffing your feet" and such).
Up at 6:30am. These interstate motels are always interesting places of activity early in the morning. Lots of folks packing cars, tightening straps on their roof racks and general scurrying around. We have been driving round parallel with this group and stay at the same camp sites, but have not had a chance to sit down and get to know them - nothing that a camp fire and marshmallows cannot fix. ... easy but one section we came across was muddy and tricky. Bill asked if we should go back? I said it would be a poor show if we chickened out on our first tricky bit. It only lasted a mile and led us out of the forest into the middle of a housing estate. Bizarre.
There is a huge amount of agriculture here. Massive chicken and turkey farms and loads of corn. The housing is better but still based on trailers although very smart and large ones. Immaculate gardens ...
