... will be hard to resist not bringing something home to hang on the wall as a souvenier :) It's been a challenge getting used to the dress code for women and it feels strange to have to wear a long-sleeved trench coat inside when we're at a restaurant, but those are the rules. The coat and scarf stay on in public at all times. Also we can't seem to figure out how the locals keep their head scarfs in place but a quick trip to a ...

In addition to this, I found an exciting reading called The Age of Nepotism that talks about different cultures and the ways to connect with others. Tehran

Early rise for a long day's travelling

... been diddled by the cashier as I could only count around R600,000 in notes. Turns out the R1,000 note (or was it R100,000 - really can't remember) was in fact a R1,000,000 note! Gotta love those noughts! After a seemingly endless bus journey into Tehran with the inside temperature showing as 38 celsius we arrived at our hotel, and checked in. I finally got into bed at 4.21 am, Tehran time, 19 hours after getting up! Still, at least I would have two and a half hours before I had to get up!!!

... started almost immediately. He asked questions like: -Where were you before Iran? (Turkey) -Where are you going after Iran? (Hopefully Syria via Turkey) -How long is your trip? (1 year) -Where have you been on your trip so far? (I told him) -Where will you be going after Syria? (Jordan) -What other countries do you have left on your trip? (I told him) -Why did you pick these countries? Aren't they dangerous? (Because they seem more adventurous than the alternative. And no they ...

... their shoulders and rub their hands through another man's hair. He laughed and said it was VERY normal. It means the man really values your friendship and that I should not confuse it with anything else. He also said I shouldn't be surprised if he tries to give me a kiss on the cheek when we say hello or good bye to each other. This I was used to because of my Italian background. The conversation then changed to safety in Iran. He said I would have no problems traveling in ...

Having aPersonal Guide during my 1st day in Tehran

... ok as I was an experienced traveler and that I would be able to take care of myself. I explained to him that if I could do East Africa by myself, I could do Tehran. To that he replied in a bewildered manner, "But Tehran is not like East Africa." This made me laugh. I explained that I would have an easier time here but he insisted that he escort me. Why not? It would make things easier. I didn't underestimate what a nice thing he was doing for me. He just completed a 36 ...
