Well i survived the flights to reach Nepal and have now got time on my hands to write my first blog. arrived in nepal at about 4am NZ time after having got up at 2.30am the previous morning to get to the airport. on the plane to sydney with me was a subdued Wallaby's team (haha aussie), had a few hours hanging out at the airport before the long flight to Hong Kong, as soon as got off the plane (which was delayed) had to rush through the airport (even taking a train to the gate) to make my nex...
Kathmandu, Nepal brooke_nz11 Oct 06 - 31 Oct 06 The long awaited trek...! Finally! We did it - booked it almost a year ago, we could not go there in April due to mass strikes that blocked the country; we postponed it to October - for the best! We had the most fabulous time, fabulous weather, and most amazing team with us (Bishwa our guide, and Drugba our porter)! Here was our itinerary: Day 01: Kathmandu to Besisahar (823m); 8 hrs drive. A very (not) nice drive on a public bus, jam packed with locals hopping on and of...
Kathmandu, Nepal gaiamuni... matters at all. Enough was enough and I decided to turn back - an hour from EBC, but I knew I had to get all the way back down and did not want to risk it for - well nothing very spectacular. Kirsty battled on and made it, perhaps the most unenjoyable walk she has ever done and the coldest both of us have ever been. I was a little dissapointted I hadn't quite made it until we read that the 52 expedition had used Gorak Shep as their base ...
Kathmandu, Nepal sophiemills... threw his arms around my shoulders and we thumped each other on the back until we were almost breathless.
Did they conquer nature? Themselves? Limitations? Or is there more to a quest? After three and a half plates of Dal Bhat, I hunker off to the dorm bed, completely fatigued. Tomorrow we will climb Kala Pattar and watch the sun set on Everest. Maybe then I'll have an answer.
Day 18 (Kala Pattar)
"That's Kala Pattar ...

... bathing, washing clothes, worshipping in the river and cremating family members at the buring ghats - at the end though we felt a little odd about the whole thing, like we may have pryed a little too much into other people's lives. We feel lucky to have seen these things though.
Our time in India was nearing an end as we made our way to Varanasi airport (in a white ambassador). We looked forward to the ease of flying an hour to ...
... for 80p. It shows everything I need and fits neatly into my pocket. I also managed to find a current edition "Rough Guide to Nepal" for around £8 but I am going to go back for that later. I think that will be helpful when I get more ambitious and decide to find my way to the main attractions that are located outside of Thamel.
The journey was fairly unremarkable apart from the fuss that was made at Delhi airport!! As we left the plane everyone ...
... honour of each, its blood being smeared over the front of the plane. And then, all of a sudden, goat is on every menu.
After our pleasant interlude in Ghandruk we set off the next morning on the final leg of our walk back to Naya Pul. We knew that it was downhill and along the flat all the way so we had a leisurely breakfast before setting off. We walked down a broad valley through several other Gurung villages before winding up down at river level. The sun was beating down ...
