The Homeland!

We drove for quite some time, and arrived in Germany at dusk...
Prettiest. City. Ever. WOW. As of right now, I've never been to a more quaint, charming city. The drive in was along the river, lined by beautiful German mansions in all different colors. Our hotel was right on the river, to the left of the famous archway to the main bridge in …

Deutschland, Tag 2

The next day we went to the Mercedes Benz factory in the morning, which was cool but got kind of boring because there was a lot of car-part name dropping that we didn't care about or understand. The tour was at the Worth plant, which is the largest truck factory in the world. American trucks were absolutely shown up by their Mercedes counterparts. …

This morning we got up early, had breakfast in our hotel (Hotel Francais), and then walked across the road to Gare De l'est, the train station where we caught the TGV out of France and into Germany. We departed the train in Mannheim and then caught a local train to our next stop for a couple of days - Heidelberg. We got off the train, at the huge …

Christmas in Germany

Christmas was almost canceled this year for me. By the time I got home from my half-day of work on Friday, the snowfall in Germany was already causing us problems. We had to cancel our family trip to Baiersbronn because the snow in the region made it virtually inaccessible. So much for our snowshoeing plans! I quickly pulled my snow gear out of my …

... I guess it pays to tell everybody that you want a Christmas Card from them! To everybody else, you still have time...

I was quite pleased with the box of Australian goodies which included: Vegemite (an Australian breakfast spread), The Advertiser newspaper (still rubbish), an umbrella hat (wouldn't be caught dead in it), an Adelaide calendar plus a variety of souvenirs including magnets, pins and stickers.
But come ...

We stayed here on Christmas night and were delighted to find a Christmas basket in our room when we checked in. The staff were so friendly and helpful, the hotel is clean, quiet and comfortable, and the location cannot get any better!

    Tolles Hotel in toller Lage

    from wardk

100% NOT a 1* hotel as per Tripadvisor rating!!! A 3* at least!

    from bikergirl

We arrived in Heidelberg in the pouring rain, decided that we liked what we could see through the constant rain and went into a internet cafe and found a deal for this hotel for 2 nights (Monday and Tuesday). Five minutes after booking through priceline, we walked into the hotel lobby, expecting to be told that the room was not ready yet. The lady on reception confirmed that she had received fax booking just that moment and we were given room key straight away. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Lobby very nice and not shabby.

The room was a reasonable size on the 2nd floor, no bath in the en-suite, just a shower. Room and bathroom was very very clean. Beds comfortable. We were on the side of the hotel with a view of an Irish Bar and a glimpse of the river. We were worried about noise at night, being opposite a bar however we did not hear a thing - however we had the windows closed due to the constant rain!

Breakfast was 11€ each extra and in our opinion, worth it. Lots of choice, from boiled eggs, sausage and bacon to usual continental selections.

No hotel car parking as the hotel is right on the front of the river, however you can park in a multi-storey a few streets away for 8€ a day. There is space in front of the hotel to park up to load/unload the car. Location is great - not right on top of the town, but only a few minutes away. The current Tripadvisor hotel rating for this hotel is a 1* which initially put us off, but after checking a few other websites decided to book anyway - we're glad we did. At least a 3* hotel, in a great town location.

Nice hotel, but beware of first floor rooms during the summer...

    from SurfsUp60

Our family of three stayed at the Hollander Hof during the World Cup in June. The good: Prime location at the Alte Bridge, very friendly and professional staff, room was large even by American standards, room was clean, bathroom was modern, clean and well done (no "yuck" factor at all), small fridge and mini bar with reasonably priced items. There is a small store right next door, so you could get water, soda, etc and keep it in the fridge. Hotel also has wi-fi (2.50 Euro per hour). Breakfast was included in our package and was excellent in quality and choices. Cold cereals, fruits, cheeses, eggs, sausages, and fantastic fresh breads.  Great coffee - really got you going in the morning. The room did have safe.

Now for the not so good. It was summer, a bit warm, and there was no A/C (there was a small table fan). Not having A/C isn't the end of the world, but when you are in the room (124) that overlooks the outdoor tables of the hotel's restaurant - with World Cup games being shown nightly - it would have been a nice option not to have open windows. (We have nothing against soccer - we were there for the WC!) Also, the road running in front of the hotel is cobblestone, so there was road noise. And when the delivery trucks started rumbling through around 5 am, it was noisy enough to wake you. To me the lobby seemed a bit on the worn side, although the furnishings might be considered "vintage" or antique I guess. The room was much more polished.

We would stay here again, but not during the summer.

Great location, good room for family with young kids

    from Scrapegypt

We stayed at the Hollander Hof for 3 nights. We booked a quad room for our family (2 adults, 2 young teens). We arrived about 9:30 am and were expecting to store our luggage and walk around and have lunch until our room was ready. So, we were quite surprised to find that our room was ready upon our arrival. Great help to weary (and sick) travellers!

The room was furnished with 2 queen sized beds. One had obviously been put in to make it a quad, but the room was easily large enough to handle it - especially for $145 a night. However, with 2 teens and 2 adults - one bath was tough. This room would be great for a family with young kids.

We did not eat breakfast at the hotel. At 11 euros per person - I thought that was high, especially since my husband only has coffee. Instead, we walked a few blocks to the Starbucks and fed the 4 of us for about 13 euros.

We had room 123 - just opposite the breakfast room on the 1st floor (1 above ground level), but we were never bothered with noise from early risers. However, there was noise into the night from some roudy party-ers and in the early morning from the traffic on the cobblestone street in front of the hotel. But it didn't wake my kids - so I didn't worry about it too much.

The location of this hotel is great - right on the river (we had a beautiful view) and just 2 blocks from the main square and the main shopping street. There are plenty of restaurants around and lots of great shopping.

I am planning a "ladies trip" for next November and will try to talk the others into staying here.

    Great hotel in great location

    from wardk

I had no reservaion and arrived at 10pm for one night in mid August 2005. Our accomodations for our family of four was one large quad room with two twins and one double bed with shower for 135 euro ($167) per night. We got a price break because of late arrival which did not include a breakfast which was available for an extra charge. We opted to get breakfast at very good pastry/coffee shop one block away on square. The pictures of rooms do not do them justice, the double bed shown was in an alcove, adjoining room with twins was much bigger. The room was very comfortable. The hotel is about 200 years old but very nice. Our room had modern conviences such as TV, phone, with an elevator available.

The hotel is very nice and located in old town directly on river. You are just a block away from historic square and main street crowded with lovely shops. The hotel has a deal with a parking garage where you can catch the funacular to castle. The parking garage is located about 5 blocks away and cost 8 euro a day payable through hotel.

The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

    Fabulous Hotel and Location

    from anonymous

This hotel is a superb property located adjacent to the bridge and everything else. The rooms are as spacious as they get in Heidelberg, modern, and very clean. Again, the location can't be beat, near everything!...Inclusive breakfast was well above standard, and dining in and around the hotel was fantastic. I will be staying here again in August of 05, just an incredible place...

    Cheers,

    Great hotel

Stayed at this hotel in February 2005. The location was superb, right on the alte bridge and 5 minutes walk to the church and main shopping strip. The staff were also friendly and helpful. The room was clean and very large, with comfortable bedding. The bathroom was clean with a superb shower! Overall, this hotel comes very highly recommended.

    Great Old Town Location

    from RGTraveler

We had a most enjoyable 2 nights stay in June 2004. This hotel is located right next to the Old Bridge and river in the heart of old Heidelberg. Literally a 1-2 minute walk to churches, restaurants, bars and all the great old buildings.

The service and staff were excellent. Ask for room 124 which is large and has 3 big windows overlooking the Old Bridge and Neckar River.

(Quad rate 6/04 was 172 EUR). I would definitely stay there again.

The famous castle is worth the long climb and is fascinating day or evening. The Philosophers Walk across the Bridge (right outside our hotel) provides a panoramic view back over the city, river and castle.

    Fantastic Service and Location

    from LLion

I was a student in Heidelberg and know this city extremely well. Business and pleasure have brought me back to the city of my youth many, many times. I have stayed in a number of hotels in Heidelberg but keep coming back to this one. What more can I say but the service is truly outstanding. The multilingual staff goes out of their way to insure your stay in Heidelberg whether for business or pleasure is a happy one.

The rooms are clean and simply furnished. The view of the Neckar river and the Old Bridge is unparalleled. It is an easy walk to most of the famous sights and streets of old Heidelberg.

The noise from outside can be a bit too much during the summer months but that is the price you pay for a location that is central to nearly everything. Parking is at a public facility a 5 minute walk away, not too bad for an city 808 years old and not built for cars.

When I walk in the door after an absense of more than a year, I am greeted warmly like an old friend returning home for a visit. Usually my favorite room is arranged for me well in advance with a nice plate of fruit. I am greeted by name as well.

There are fancier hotels in town, with air conditioning, larger rooms, and on site parking but none of them has the friendliness, charm and service as the Holländer Hof Hotel. I highly recommend it.
