Because the central area is so small most of the tour was in the suburbs, especially Oak Bay. Most streets were lined with trees and there were council crews in some, pruning them. Other streets were under construction, which the driver said was usual. His comment ' The shortest distance between 2 points is always under construction". ... as we climbed up to Beacon Hill Park. This park sits on the south coast of the island and overlooks the ocean. It apparently got its name because this hill use to be covered with beacons to warn sailors of the rugged shoreline.
