Day 4 - Washington DC

10/5/1996

We didn't go on the organised tour of the city this morning, as we had done it last year and wanted to do the museums instead. After a buffet breakfast we left at about 9am and walked down to the front of the White House, where I bought a chiffon Stars and Stripes scarf from a street vendor J, and then went round to the back to take photos of the famous view.

We then walked down Pennsylvania Avenue as far as the Old Post Office building, which is now a shopping mall an...

Washington DC

A long day. Started in Jamestown which I remember enjoying. Then to Richmond and Charlottesville which I barely remember. Then finally into Washington DC. I still remember seeing the Washington Monument with its red lights on top flashing in the night sky.

Back to the Hotel

In Washington: the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, The Capital tour, the Smithsonian, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Ford Theater, the National Archives, the White House, the FBI, the Washington Monument, the National Cathedral, Embassy row, Explorer's Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Watergate building, and the National Zoo. On SNL that weekend, Dexy's Midnight Runners played. **** I hate that band! One night in the hotel Vince pooped himself and raised holy hell denying it. He a...

Good tourist choice

from william1000
Good location and walkable to most tourist sites. Rooms were fine , nothing special. Staff were good. Reasonable rates in washington make it worth a recommendation. Good breakfasts across the road and 2 blocks south.

Great Hotel for a Great Price!

from marc1976
I stayed at this hotel with my father from March 17th through March 19th in room 716. I was very satisfied with this hotel for the price I paid, which was only $74.50 a night. It's not the Ritz Carlton, but it is a very nice hotel for the price, which is why I'm giving it 5 circles. The hotel is only an 8-10 minute walk to The White House. I found the area to be very safe as well. The front desk people were very polite and courteous. The lobby was on the small side, but was nicely decorated. We had the breakfast buffet, which was excellent (about $12.00 each). The room was not as small as other reviewers portray them to be, but was a decent-sized room with a clean bathroom. We both found the beds to be very comfortable (extra pillows were in the dresser drawers). The check-in was very quick wth no problems. The reservation I made months earlier was exactly what was provided. I would definitely stay here again.

Absolutly Awful!

I wouldn't suggest this for a family. The service is absolutley horrible. There aren't many restauraunts or attractions nearby. This isn't a hotel you would want to spend your vacation at.

Just ok

from mcgorr
just a satisfactory hotel, rooms old, not plesantly decorated. A long walk from anywhere including restaurants. Staff very courteous. I have stayed in a lot nicer for the same money. Very clean.

Stay here for value, accommodations and service.

We were first-time visitors to Washington, DC, and managed to get an excellent rate at the Holiday Inn Washington-Central. The location is very good and eliminated any concerns we had about problem areas. Also, the staff was top-notch, corrected our room immediately and got us a non-smoking one, at that. Would recommend to anyone wanting an excellent hotel to stay here while in DC, I know we will.

Holiday Inn Central-good experience, good price

from kkasi
My 10 year-old and I spent the weekend at this hotel. It was a pretty good experience. My son liked the pool on the roof and the game room.

The game room had about 6 video games, which was fine for entertaining my son while waiting for family to meet up with us. The room was nothing fancy, but roomy enough with a king and sofa-sleeper. The only problem we had was in the restaurant one morning when my order took 30 minutes to appear, and when it did, it was inaccurate. They offer a breakfast buffet for $11.95 (which is too expensive), but my son ate free, so I only feel slightly ripped-off. The hotel staff was very nice and helpful with directions and answering other questions. The couches in the lobby are worn and should be recovered soon.I would have rated this hotel one circle lower, except with a AAA rate, it was very reasonable to stay here. The location is good.

Great for groups / Families

We have used this property for years as a supplier for numerous group tour series and ad hoc arrivals. The only way to beat the property is to use it's sister-property the H.I. Downtown. However, if you have a family, stay at this property. The staff, rooms, facilities, breakfast (opt for the hote buffet) are all excellent for the price! Forget the "Ritz", stay here! (yes, the tv's do automatically lower audio volume at night at this property - it's not a ghost; just a means of controlling noise pollution/complaints in the hotel).

Excellent all around

Excellent hotel!!! was close to everything and rooms were very nice.

once checked in, i needed an extra bed and they offered me an upgrade to a room that has an extra room for no extra charge. staff was very friendly and helpful. took my two teens and they found the video game room which kept them from getting bored when we were actually in the hotel. also has a nice rooftop pool that was very clean.definitly would stay here again if go to DC.

It Was Great!

We have never really had a nice vacation so when we decided to go to DC, I wanted the absolute best that we could afford or I wasn't going to go!. One day I fould special rates at this hotel. They seemed too good to be true(74.50 as opposed to the 150.00 I thought I was going to spend) so I read as many reviews as I could find. None were bad so I booked a room for 5 nights. This Holiday Inn is in a great location, just like it claims. Just a short walking distance from either McPherson Sq or Dupont Circle metro stops. We walked to the White house and it only took minutes. We arrived early and the hotel has a room to keep your luggage in but the hotel staff changed our room (to a better room, by the way) just so we could check in. Our room was clean, as was the entire hotel (which was much more elegant than I imagined a Holiday Inn). It was a room similar to many (and had 2 sinks- one in the bathroom, one outside the bathroom door- great when you have teenagers!)but was large enough that we still had plenty of room to put a roll-away bed. We had a view of Embassy Row. Very nice large window. I have never been to DC and was a bit worried. The area was so nice that we let our teenagers walk to a local restaurant in the evening. One night we came back to the hotel after 10pm and the streets were quiet and there was the obvious presence of police. Not knowing where to go for breakfast, we decided to take the chance on eating at the hotel restaurant (we've had bad luck with hotel restaurants). It was excellent! Our youngest was able to eat at the breakfast buffet for free. The average breakfast was 5.50-6.00 plus beverage costs and I believe it was better than a deluxe breakfast that you would receive at Bob Evans or Perkins or the like. After the first day, my husband and I actually shared each meal because they were so big .We ended out eating there every morning, excellent each time, at the average cost of 22.00 for 5 people. It was a great way to start off a busy day of sightseeing. We also ate one luints at all.I was also thrilled to find that they had free washer and dryer use for our use. I hated the idea of packing dirty clothes (5 people). They have a small shop in the hotel that sells souveniers and tour tickets. The staff was extremely nice and helpful.I remember that when I was reading these reviews before my trip, I was scared that when I came back, I too would be writing a review and it wouldn't be good. I had never been to DC, knew nothing about the area and I was very, very sceptical of the low price. Thankfully, I have nothing but good things to say about this hotel and I finally had a vacation that was GREAT! I would stay here again even if I had to pay full price. Thank you Holiday Inn Central White House!

Great location, nice hotel

from natlancon
I went to the Holiday inn central in september 2002. The location is perfect: near the White House, not far from the Mall. We did all the visits by foot. Even if Washington DC is well known for its criminalty, we didn't feel unsafe in this hotel. The rooms are spacious with a big bathroom; the staff is nice. There's a big swimming pool on the roof but it closed the day we arrived... If I was going back to Washington DC, I would choose this hotel every times.
