The Memorial is filled with symbolism, for example the 36 columns represent the states in the union at the time of Lincoln's death, and the 48 stone festoons on the attic above the columns represent the 48 states in 1922 when the memorial was dedicated.

Arrived Washington DC on the evening of the 25th Dec and booked into the 'Inn of Rosslyn" on Arlington Blvd just across the river from Washington DC - a very convenient walking or cycling distance to most of the DC attractions (there are rental bike stations scattered all over the places-of-interest at $7 per day - very convenient).

Today we had a 10:30 am Capitol building tour, so we decided to visit the Library of Congress beforehand. This turned out to be a good decision. The interior is beautiful and we managed to go through a newly opened exhibition on the Civil Rights movement, it is the 50 th anniversary of the movement.
