... for the first time in eight months. We were then completely outdone by the cycling couple who, clearly well-practiced, had theirs set up in a fraction of the time and were moving on with other tasks!

The interior of the Memorial is divided into three chambers and the north and south side chambers contain carved inscriptions of Lincoln's second inaugural address and his Gettysburg Address. The Memorial is filled with symbolism, for example the 36 columns represent the states in the union at the time of Lincoln's death, and the 48 stone festoons on the attic above the columns represent the 48 states in 1922 when the memorial was dedicated.

Arrived Washington DC on the evening of the 25th Dec and booked into the 'Inn of Rosslyn" on Arlington Blvd just across the river from Washington DC - a very convenient walking or cycling distance to most of the DC attractions (there are rental bike stations scattered all over the places-of-interest at $7 per day - very convenient).

Spent the 26th just settling in and wandering around Arlington finding out where things are and working out a plan for today ...

Today we had a 10:30 am Capitol building tour, so we decided to visit the Library of Congress beforehand. This turned out to be a good decision. The interior is beautiful and we managed to go through a newly opened exhibition on the Civil Rights movement, it is the 50 th anniversary of the movement. This was a very interesting and informative exhibit and took up our time so we decided we would return after the Capitol tour and go on a Library tour which are on ...
