The Blue Ridge Parkway runs through the Appalachians in Virginia, and what a beautiful drive! All the rain here creates a very green, lush landscape filled with yellow, white, purple and pink wildflowers and soft pink mountain laurel blooms as well as bright pink rhododendrons. North of the Parkway lies Shenandoah National Park with more of the same peaceful feel. In Fall, this area ...

... us are using, had the pages of his guide that showed the elevation profiles of the trail posted on a big board in the back of his booth at Trail Days. You could go in and post your name on an arrow-shaped sticky note wherever you got off the trail for the festival, and the largest grouping was definitely Pearisburg. But while there were few large ups and downs, the flattest part of the trail for the day turned out to be a very rocky ridge that slowed us down quite a bit. We still made fine time, but it wasn't the easy stroll we imagined, and our feet were sore afterward.

Finally, however, I got my 15 mile day, as the next shelter ...

Damascus to Daleville, Va (mile 728)

... of Damascus was pretty rough. There was a big climb right out of town, and it didn't help that I had just resupplied and had a lot of food weight in my pack. The terrain leveled out after the climb and has been great since. I've really enjoyed the flatter trail that is in Virginia. With the exception of a couple mountains here and there, I'm able to make a lot of miles ...
