The magic of Christmas on the Grado lagoon

... in July.

Plus a whole range of children’s entertainment: from St Nicholas’ blow-up village with games and sweet surprises to the seashore ice-skating rink where you can skate under the stars until the old year ends, not forgetting Father Christmas’ traditional visit to distribute gifts.

Music lovers are spoilt for choice: on 19 December at 4.30pm in the Basilica of St Eufemia a concert by the ...

Driving in Slovenia and actually seeing stuff

... to make en route.

It took about an hour and a half to reach Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital. From the highway, there were not clear signs pointing towards the center of the city, so, once again, it was kind of a **** shoot. After about thirty minutes of lucky guessing and a little backtracking, I finally spotted the castle and the pedestrian-only center of town. I lucked into a place to put my car (I hesitate to call it a parking spot ...

Trieste, my home!

... placed beside the road. They will lead you to a farm or winery where you will taste (and buy if you wish!) self-produced wine and food.

Last tip: if you ever heard someone say that Trieste is too quiet, I dare you to visit it during the Barcolana, the world-famous sailing race open to everyone, professionals and amateurs, which attracts thousands of tourists every year. It will be an experience you will never forget.

See you in Trieste!

Trieste, mama mio

In short, VERY HOT from the early morning... after nearly suffocating in the truck we are having breakfast at the parking and we are going for a cycle around Trieste. Without having a detailed map we are going somewhere and... we are finding all most important spots of this city. First we see the ruins of Old Roman Theatre, after San Giusto Cathedral and castle, gardens we don not know the names of... for more info see http://www.karlonia.com/2009 ...

The former Venetian outpost of Koper, Slovenia

Italian is not a common 2nd language in the countries we've visited, but Koper Slovenia had clearly been conquered by the Italians and left with evidence of their rule. The city was settled in Roman times, then influenced by the Byzantine Empire around 600-800 AD, and ruled by Venice from 1300-1800.

Street signs were in Italian and Slovenian, and the lion emblem of Venice was posted on several important buildings. The familiar locking window ...

In town for a wedding

This is a great small town, where they actually choose to not speak english. We went from the restaurant to bar to wedding to bar to restaurant to bar (the Black Stuff) etc. Eat, Drink, Sleep repeat for a few days. It was a beautiful wedding and a great town.

Castles and Chocolate

... wants Steff and me to be eating chocolate. We walked into the tents and it was so cool. Every stand was handing out free chocolate samples and there was a chocolate sculpter we watched for a while. That was fun because any of the extra shavings he made we were allowed to walk up and take to eat, and the chocolate he was using was delicious. There was another chef making statues and art out of the chocolate and one place had ...

Trieste, Italy (ancestral home of the Persis)

... in the Serie B, to which Mr Persi had kindly arranged tickets for us. Triestina, after a good start to the season, were resting some key players for the visit of Leffe, who were not very fancied. This gamble proved to backfire, with Leffe running out 2-1 victors. It was a great experience though, to see the passion of the few thousand Triestina supporters who turned up, along with the three (yes three) members of the "Albino Leffe Ultras" who bothered ...
