Historical Traveler Reviews Holiday Inn Pittsburgh University Center
Just spent two nights at the Holiday Inn University virtually on the campus of University of Pittsburgh. This was a great location to see both Pitt and CMU. Easy cab ride from the airport and close walking distance from both Universities. Walked everywhere or else took free shuttle available from the hotel..call and they'll pick you up! Only complaint may be the slooow elevators. Room was fine and we had a Pitt rate...ask when you make a reservation. Loved Pittsburgh and would definitely stay again if my child goes to school there.
I thought for the price, we would have a really nice hotel. Its just an average hotel and I've paid the same price for much nicer rooms. It did have a great location.
Had a issue with the door card reader not working. Had a maintence man came in and his expert advise was to bang on it till it worked. Also, we had mold in the shower and the floor was dirty in the bathroom, yuck!
We just stayed here a few days ago, while visiting the University of Pittsburgh. The location could not have been better! The lobby was nice, and staff was very friendly although occasionally incompetent. The free shuttle service to the bridge across from PNC Park was an added bonus, as we wanted to take in a game but were slightly befuddled as to how to get there.
Peaceful enjoyment and style Holiday Inn Select
I have stayed at other Holiday Inns in the pittsburgh area and this one is top notch treatment in all aspects. If you are looking to relax while on a business trip or vacation I would recommend this Hotel.
The staff is very friendly and smiles. I don't see many smiles in the hotel industry. It is a very welcome change.
The restraunt staff is superb as well as the meals are tastey.
If you are one to look for something to complain about don't stay here because they don't deserve that kind of treatment for the quality they give Their guests. A class act in all aspects.
I had a conference to attend for a full weekday in July, 2005 at the University of Pittsburgh. I live about 2 hours away from PITT in normal traffic. In morning rush hour traffic from my home the Parkway East and Squirrel Hill Tunnels make that drive 4 hours if I want to be at PITT by 9A.M. sharp.
I won a bid at this hotel for July 21, 2004. We didn't have time to roam the city so I cannot comment too much about the area. Although it is not directly off the highway, we found it without difficulty with the directions from the hotel. The hotel has parking on site; we paid $17.00 per day. I believe this included in/out privileges but we kept the car in it's spot. The parking is actually underneath the hospital next door. The hospital and the hotel share a common driveway.
Great location and good value
Just returned from a stay here and I have nothing but positive things to say. The room was comfortable and a good value. The hotel is extremely convenient - the Airport Flyer bus stop is a block away, the Cathedral of Learning is across the street, and it is a short walk to tons of restaurants along Forbes Ave. They also offer a free shuttle around Pittsburgh until 9pm, which is very handy and saved me money on cab/bus fares. Overall, it was a very enjoyable stay and I would definitely recommend this place to others.
Upon check-in I asked for a King non-smoking--when I got to the room it was two doubles that strongly smelled of smoke. Went down to again request a king non-smoking and was then given a non-smoking with two doubles. Went back down for third try at same request and was then told by same front desk woman (whose badge said she was a supervisor) that no king non smoking rooms were available. I then asked her why she didn't just tell me that to begin with--she made excuses, but refused to apologize or admit any fault. I finally accepted a non smoking with two doubles. In the bathroom I found about ten hairs (not mine) in tub, sink area, etc. The room itself was tired looking, but adequate. Overall this hotel is not up to par--housekeeping is poor as is the service from the daytime front desk "Supervisor". The location may be good for people with business at the local colleges and hospitals, but most others will prefer to be downtown. My advice--try somewhere else.
Good hotel in great location
This was a good but standard hotel located near the major Pittsburgh universities. The room was large and well equiped. My room had an excellent high-speed ADSL connection that was free, which is almost a first in my experience! Other hotel charges were average.
I don't understand the comment by the previous reviewer that there are no nearby restaurants. I saw many within a 5 minute walk and went to two good ones. There may be none within a block, but the area is very pleasant for walking.
Overall, I would recommend the hotel to others.
.10 cents/ min phone card charges is just one of many annoying features about this hotel. Conviently situated on campus, it squanders its location by charging above average rates for mediocre rooms. restaurant is ok, and is the only one in walking distance. in keeping with the 'doesnt know what to do with a good thing' theme, they book jazz acts there every sunday thus ruling it out as an enjoyable evening dining spot. plan on getting a cab that night. Because it's at the university, one would think they would cater to travelers with computer needs.
