Historical Traveler Reviews of Holiday Inn Select Boston-Government Ctr, Ma

Okay unless you have a problem

from A TripAdvisor Member
When we first got to the front desk, we were told that we would receive an upgraded room as priority club members. We later found that they gave our room to another couple that we were travelling with. We spoke to the front desk, expecting an apology and an attempt to compensate us. However, the staff members that we spoke with were both rude and argumentive, not listening or even offering an "I'm sorry." Stay here and you take your chances, if nothing goes wrong, your worst problem is that the bathroom is old and in need of repair, but if you have a question or issue, be prepared for a rude and argumentive staff.

Great Staff, great stay at the Holiday Inn Select

from terrygard
Just back from my trip to Beantown. I had a great stay at the Holiday Inn Select Gov't Center. I loved the location's access to various T lines (red, blue and green w/in 2-4 blocks) and the courteous staff. The staff is great at pointing someone new to the city toward the right T-station or best walking route to historic sites.

I joined the hotel's membership program Priority Select before going and as a result received free local calls among other perks. The hotel has someone at the front desk 24/7, and I found them all courteous and helpful. There is some construction going on near the hotel (I believe in connection with the Big Dig), but I didn't find it an obstacle. The rooms are clean, the beds comfortable, and the staff courteous. I wish the fitness center was a bit bigger, but there's so much walking in Boston, I got plenty of exercise the natural way. The Holiday Inn may not be the Four Seasons, but it was exactly what I had in mind.

Good location but overpriced

The Holiday Inn Boston Government Center has a great location near Beacon Hill and adjacent to the Boston Commons. Convenient to the "T" Red Line. Rooms are seviceable, with nice views. Somewhat overpriced.

Needs Improvement - Not Horrible

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here for two nights a few years ago, and I guess it was not horrible but it really needs an update. The lobby is pretty small for a big city hotel, but is not that bad. The evevators are soooo old and they need to be either replaced to seriously servied. The rooms are nicely decorated in darker colors with plaids and wraught iron accents with all your typical hotel room perks like coffee maker, cable tv, desk with lamp, data port etc etc. This is not a good place to stay with kids because the pool is old and is outdoors. The exercise room is also very old and needs new equipment. One thing that constantly bothered me here was the fact that the hallways are dimmly light, it just seemed rather shady. On a good note, the hotel is very close to the subway (The "T") and has a CVS and Shop & Shop right next door. I would not eat at the hotel, for there are numerous restaraunts within a 5 min walk, or hop The T. I felt that this was a pretty safe neighborhood, nothing to worry about there, the hotel just needs serious updating. Happy Travels!

Ok, not perfect, depends what one is wants to do.

I have stayed there about 3 times. It is pretty good, never had a terrible problem. The staff are ok, and the hotel is clean. The pluses are: 1) Room service 2) right in boston 3) metro very close 4)clean hotel

Negatives: 1) Some times it would take along time to get a request or compliant followed through.

2)No good to have a car when staying there, packing hard to find and the car garage is very expensive.

3) Some college students live there! so they can be loud

I would not recommend this for people with kids or large families. I would give it 4 circles if one was staying there with out kids and with out a car otherwise 3 circles.

ONly is you need to stay near MGH

from A TripAdvisor Member
Frustrating and uneven are the best words. Poorly marked to the parking area. Maybe it was the contruction in the properity next door. The hotel issued a passin and out of the gargae that never worked. Had to walk around the block to get to lobby on the coldest night of the year.

Room was alledgely upgraded but no noticable differences. The restruant menu was very limited and food was so-so. Waitress was pleasant and desk people good. Halls were drafty. Went to vending machine to get bottled ware and the machine gave 5 for the price of one. The onle reason to stay is near Mass Generla Hopsital and had early tests. The hospital's MRI machine had slightly more room then the bathrooom at the hotel. Left something in room and had to go back to get it and was given a thrid degree quiz to get it.

Miserable Hotel

Sketchy people, old & dirty rooms, horrible bathrooms, dirty & dark hallways, bad elevators, bad food. I stayed for three weeks for business, I would be sure to never stay there again.

Not a great place to stay compared with other Boston Hotels

from PKFelix
Lots of reasons not to stay here: 1/very noisy - construction going on right next door and the fire station is right down the street (not to mention all the ambulances coming to and going from the hospital - if you need quiet to sleep, don't sleep at Holiday Inn Govt Select!; 2/Terrible workout facilities - really not much works in there and the equipment is old and junky; 3/rooms aren't very nice compared to other Boston hotels at comparable rates - few cable channels, small rooms; 4/no business facilities which makes it very hard if you need to make a copy of something, need access to the web or need to print something - don't stay here if you're on business! They don't have very good wine selections at their restaurant either. Overall, I wouldn't recommend that people stay here.

Not impressive for business travelers

from A TripAdvisor Member
Good location, but this hotel is not set up for business travelers. No high-speed internet access and no business center in the hotel. Also, the fitness center was poorly maintained - two tred mills that didn't work and two bikes, one of which had a spring that poked you, the other's seat height couldn't be adjusted. Finally, if you like environmentally-focused hotels, despite the sign in the room saying they only change towels if requested, I hung my towels everyday and never requested clean ones, but received 3 fresh towels plus a fresh bathmat daily.

Nice Location. But.............

Be prepared for the noise..................... Stayed Sept.28th 03 for 4 nights. Hotel nicely located short walk to T, Bowdoin or Charles/MGH stops. Although you can easily reach most places on foot. Faneuil hall, Quincy market, State house, City hall, King's chapel, Boston common, Fleet center all within 10-15 mins. Nice enough room on the 10th floor overlooking charles river. Elevators are very very slow, waited more than 5 mins. sometimes. This hotel is opposite Massachusetts General Hospital and there is a busy firehouse right across the street, in and out all the time. Also lots of other roadworks nearby associated with the Big Dig. If you need peace and quiet to get to sleep then this ain't the place for you.
