Final thoughts on Japan

... of the atrocity of the bombing. After Hiroshima we finally made for Natalie who lives in Sasebo. With her we visited also island called Oshima and Nagasaki. The beach we visited was great and would have been even better if the sun had been out but the weather changed to cloudy when we reached the south. It was great staying with friends and this must have been the most chilled part of the trip. We visited the A-bomb museum in Nagasaki which was quite ...

Day 13 - We're supposed to be checking out WHEN??

As I was getting ready to go to bed, something just didn't feel right. I just had a weird feeling that I was forgetting something, so for some reason I decided to check our travel itinerary on our trip plan on travel.yahoo.com. Remember that at this stage we have already booked and paid for this Hotel room for 4 nights, due to check out on Wednesday morning (3rd September). Yahoo travel blog says that we have 3 ...

Day 12 - Seiwa Joshi Gakuin, Sasebo

... a little weird, but we smiled and played along with it. Once again, a completely different culture to Australian schools, in which we probably wouldn't have even been shown through, let alone seranaded. We eventually freed ourselves from the clutches of that class, and moved on. Apparently the school has greatly downsized since Veronica attended, both in students and staff. There seemed to be quite a few empty classes, as well as some classrooms with ...

Day 11 - The Sasebo bus tour

... the city, the naval bases and out to sea, which was a superb way to get an overview of the city. With the observatory done, we headed back down the mountain and through the city back to the train station. Thanked our driver very much for giving up his morning for us, and went on our way. On the way back to the hotel we stopped at one of the shops selling the apparently famous "Sasebo burgers". And boy did they suck. $20 later for 2 burgers and some ...

Day 10 - Sasebo, and one Toilet to rule them all

... Took quite a few photos of the countryside on the journey to Sasebo. A very large storm was battering the mountains to the west of the train line. Also, the number of small villages which were basically life support systems for huge rice fields was amazing. So we arrived in Sasebo station, and with no problems found our way to the Hotel, the Sasebo Central Hotel (http://www.sasebo.co.jp/index_e.htm), which unsurprisingly is in the centre of the Sasebo shopping ...

City of peace II

... car up to a peak that has a nice view of the city. There were some nice temples in the town. I particularly like the way they used the bamboo at this temple as a flower holder. There was also a river through the center of the town. There were lots of old stone bridges across it. This one is called Spectacle Bridge-get it?!

Nagasaki Temple Tour

... at mainly temples, there's not much to tell, the pictures says it all. Yesterday I sent a mail to Mr Yasumasa, thanking him for a great night, and inviting him out tonight for a meal to repay his kindness. To my great surprise, he called me and told me he would be delighted to have dinner with me, so were meeting up in the same area we went out at two nights ago. Watch this space! VideoBlog

Out on town

... arrived at the bar there were two hostesses there. One, a lady in her forties, was dressed in a classic kimono, the other (Misaki) a 22 years old woman was dressed in a skirt with matching jacket. A bottle of Hennessey Cognac for put on table along with some light snacks. To my horror they poured the Hennessey over ice and mixed it with so much water it looked like ginger ale. Apparently they do this to stop themselves from getting too drunk. A ...

Nagasaki day 2

... in the days after the bomb, and one of the strongest an most lasting memories of the relief workers, were the victims desperate pleas for water. Again it has been an emotional day. But it has been funny to see, that Japanese school children, who are in general very polite and well behaved, can still forget themselves and fool around in a place as serious as the Atomic-Bomb museum.
