Rain, Mud, Rain, Mud ... Hippo attack ...

After a rather dull 24 hours looking out at the ******* rain outside the Holiday Inn in Lusaka I was finally met by Jaques from Pretoria ... he is the guide on Benji ... our truck ... the crew are very laid back and good craic ... Joe is the cook from Kenya ... and a bloody good one at that ... one normally expects to lose weight on this type of trip ... but it may be difficult with Joe's cooking ... seconds is far too tempting ... and food is ample ... William is our driver also a Saffer ......

Part 1 Well the eagle (or actually something more closely resembling a very bedraggled turkey) has landed. 48 hours after arriving at Auckland airport!! Good old Auckland trotted out the fog especially for the occasion and our plane (the incoming one) got diverted to Christchurch after circling Auckland for 2.5 hours and reaching crisis point with fuel. Our 0915 flight finally got of the ground at 1615 to loud clapping and cheering by a very grumpy full quota of passengers. If I had known at ...

Microlight flight over Victoria falls tomorrow and then thursday morning I leave with my new group - my current group heads to Capetown whilst 6 of us head to Jo'Burg. Its a very small group with only 6 which means easier washing up and many lockers to share etc. New guides seem really cool so really looking forward to this last leg.

... Had lunch there and decided that would do us instead of dinner later on so we could get as packed up as we could for the early off - had a light snack and early to bed. Prior to this we had a dry run to the airport which was not far from the campsite - just to make sure there were no surprises for us in the morning. Tuesday 19th May - alarm went off at 5am and all packed up and on our way by 5.40am to drive the 20 minutes to the airport to meet the 6.20am BA 255 flight from ...

Belated entry

... new trip ones & new new ones (trip total so far = 390). Gamewise we were pleasantly surprised to see quite a bit including reedbuck, impala, zebra, baboons, vervet monkeys and in the afternoon, buffalo & a lone bull elephant who was just about to step onto the track as I came round the corner - not sure who was the most surprised! An emergency stop brought us into eye contact and the elephant won - I backed up & let him cross in peace although he didn't ...

The last big shop

... to give me a hand. Beautiful. We ticked off items on the list in no time flat, managing to get everything we needed in an efficient manner. 6 carts and 2 hours later we were finished. Thanks Taryn! We returned to camp to drop off the dry goods and got ready for the market. This is where I saw the 2 faces of Lusaka. When we first arrived in Lusaka everyone was drawn to the clean and modern ...

Zooming through Zambia and Lusaka

... That of course is no longer acceptable as is most of the ancestor worship now that they have all embraced Christianity. He knows of a man from the village who's talent was to make the fermented maize beer who met Dr Livingstone during his travel in the area. Now they survive hand to mouth on fish, small animals hunted traditionally using snare traps and pumpkins grown in the village and shared unfortunately with opportunistic monkeys. They have ...

Final day of seminars in Zambia

Today was the last day of seminars. Jim gave a first seminar on the importance of personal integrity, Morgen gave one on different personality types, and I gave one on keys to effective sermon and sermonette preparation. Then we broke for lunch. Right after the meal, Jim and I interviewed on videotape the three men from Zimbabwe about the situation and conditions in their country. We may use that for a report later on. In the afternoon we had some final ...

Hey Witchdoctor, tell us the magic words...

... before we entered. The reason for this was never made clear but we did so, and, again as instructed, sat cross-legged (which is a really uncomfy position to sit in over the age of about ten, don’t you think?) in a line against the wall opposite the entrance. The room wasn’t artificially lit, so the only light crept in through a small, veiled window to my left and it took a few moments for our eyes to adjust from the direct contrast of the searing late-morning sunlight ...

My welcome to Zambia....this a welcome?

... of clothes, no extra undies, .... no no no! But I had my carry-on. Fortunate for me this was before the liquid ban and I had my malaria meds, shampoo, contact solution, etc in my carry-on along with ONE change of clothes and undies. The ticket agent in the little booth informed me that about 8 passengers from that plane were missing luggage, which was not put on the plane at Heathrow. It would be sent on another plane and delivered out to where I ...
